A Note from the Author
I recall so clearly the details of those few dozen seconds [when I broke my neck]—seconds destined to change my life forever. And there was no warning or premonition.
What happened on July 30, 1967, was the beginning of an incredible adventure that I feel compelled to share because of what I have learned.
Oscar Wilde wrote: “In this world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it.” To rephrase his thought, I suggest there are likewise only two joys. One is having God answer all our prayers; the other is not receiving the answer to all our prayers. I believe this because I have found that God knows my needs infinitely better than I know them. And He is utterly dependable, no matter which direction our circumstances take us.
—Joni Eareckson Tada

But more than that, this book is a testimony to her faith in a sovereign God, and her quest to prove His existence and His “realness” in her life. Joni openly shares her struggles—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—that she endures as her body heals and she comes to grips with the fact that she will be bound to a wheelchair, not to mention totally dependent on others for her utter and complete care, for the rest of her life. From the darkest days of depression and despondency when she contemplates suicide, to a turning point years later when she is able to give God all glory for everything that happened in her life, this book left me in awe. But as Joni would want it—not in awe of her, but of what God was able to do in and through her.
I would be remiss if I failed to mention that Joni enjoyed drawing before the accident, and afterwards she learned to draw (and write very legibly) with her MOUTH. Amazing! Her father’s insurance agent saw one of her drawings and was very impressed and even more so when her father explained that Joni was a paraplegic who drew with her mouth. The insurance agent then set up an exhibit of some of her artwork and from there, the sales took off and she was able to become a self-supporting artist.
The story doesn’t end there, however. Joni became an advocate for the disabled, founding ministries and fighting for and helping to get laws passed to prevent discrimination based on disability. The last chapters of the book discuss this and list resources for people with disabilities.
Lastly, I feel that most people know this already, but this is a book written by a Christian woman, and she does preach Christ. I read a few reviews in which readers were complaining that the book was too focused on her relationship with God, but that’s what a Christian testimony is—the story of what God has done in a Christian person’s life. So be aware that this book is more of a testimony than a biographical account of her recovery. It didn’t detract from the story at all for me, but apparently it does for some.

While 'Me before You' was wholly absorbing, well written and page turning, Joni's story is one of courage and determination born from her faith in real life and, for that, I think we should all be grateful.
