I’m a TV producer by trade. For a long time, I worked in development where I created quizzes, documentary formats and reality shows.

I’ve been trying to write a novel since my early 20s, when I wrote a spin-off of Mary Poppins, called Sister Suffragette, which was all about Winifred Banks’ adventures when she wasn’t at home singing. It’s probably for the best that it’s still in a drawer somewhere.

The Love Story of Missy Carmichael is my first full-length novel, and I wrote it on maternity leave, inspired by the people I met while I was walking my dog in the park.

In my spare time I enjoy running, cooking curries, and reading the entire internet when I should be sleeping.

A very satisfying and enjoyable read.
Clover Hendry is tired. She’s tired of being used as a doormat at work, she’s tired of her mother putting her down her entire life, and she’s tired of being tired from having nightmares every night of someone trying to break into her home. And one day she just snaps. She wakes up without the usual weight of being nice and doing what everyone else expects her to say and do. On this day, she says what she really feels and does what she wants. She walks out of work and just goes for it. She does and says all the things she’s always wanted to. And at the end of this very long day, she’s addressed pretty much everything in her life that has been weighing her down.I really enjoyed this book. Although, I don’t really agree with all the things Clover did that day but that’s what made it all so incredibly unpredictable. It did get a big confusing sometimes though. She’ll start bringing up the past but you don’t realize it’s a past memory for a bit, so in that sense the writing is a bit chaotic but that matches up with how Clover is feeling and being that day so it all fits together. All in all, a very satisfying and enjoyable read.

My Thoughts:

From the first pages of Clover Hendry’s Day Off, I was hooked on the hilarity of her actions and her choices. Someone who has always been the good girl, who has done what is expected of her, she moves from one antic to the next, building up her confidence with each moment.

We learn more about her previous actions as she moves along with the day, and as she soars, so do we. We cannot smile more or laugh harder as we join her each step of the way. Five stars.

Clover Hendry’s Day Off by Beth Morrey is a narrative of a day in the harried life of Clover Hendry. She is a wife, the mother of sixteen-year-old twins, and an assistant television producer. She takes care of everyone and rarely says no, is always accommodating and tends to avoid confrontation. Clover is exhausted from trying to please everybody and is tired of being taken advantage of in her professional life. She rarely stands up for herself. As the one caring for everyone else, her own needs are usually secondary. She was taught to be passive and compliant. Good girls didn’t cause trouble or create scenes. These were traits she carried into her adult life.

The story occurs over a single day and is told in flashbacks, alternating between present day and the past giving the reader an idea of what made Clover who she is today. On the day the story began, Clover’s morning didn’t start off well. She had an irritating migraine and was already overwhelmed with the responsibilities of her day. Before leaving home, she took some pain medication, and an antihistamine. On the train heading to work, she was struck in the head with the briefcase of a passenger causing her to pass out. That hit to the head seemed to change everything. Gone was the agreeable Clover. In her wake emerged a Clover who was ready to stand up for herself and would not be silenced. It facilitated a freedom she never experienced. It provided the catalyst Clover needed to think of her own needs and take a break from caring for others. She goes about her day doing what every she wanted and saying what she feels. As the day progressed, chaos ensued with lots of comic humor following in her wake.

This was a delightful read. It was warm, entertaining, and funny. The author created a relatable well-developed character faced with real life issues. There were hilarious moments that made me laugh out loud and instances that were poignant and thought provoking. It will keep you turning the page to see what comes next. This was my first read by the author and will seek out more of her work. I highly recommend Clover Hendry’s Day Off it is a witty and entertaining story.

This book made me laugh out loud several times. I could not be more delighted with this hilarious story of our heroine Clover Hendry and her twenty four hour romp of finely getting to do exactly what she wants for once in her life. Clover is a busy woman. She is a wife, a full time television producer, a mother with teenage twins who never says no to anyone. She has always put her needs last. She even bakes cookies for school bake sales that her children do not attend anymore! On her last day off she took her cat to the vet, browsed a Co-op and bought some AA batteries, Not exactly the spa day that she really needed. Riveting stuff? Not so much. Clovers mother raised her and her sister to be compliant so that along her life's path other people could continue this process. Clover's mantra has always been: "It's not easy making a fuss. Standing up for yourself can be awkward and embarrassing. Causing a scene is mortifying. Saying no is hard." All this mental baggage has held her back.

However all that changes when on her way to work one day she gets clipped in the head by a fellow passengers briefcase. She is helped to her feet by passersby but something has clicked in her mind, she feels different, powerful and full of chutzpah. Her inner snarkiness has been awakened! And all in a very good way. In the next twenty four hours Clover takes back her world by storm. And most importantly she learns to say no to others who want to monopolize her time, but also learns to say yes to herself.

Cheers to Clover, may she live long and prosper.! Very highly recommended. Five Stars.

I was psyched about this book. So excited that in addition to getting an ebook, when I realized I wasn’t going to get to it by pub date I felt so confident that I’d like it, I went ahead and ordered a physical copy because 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙘𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙞𝙨 𝙜𝙤𝙧𝙜𝙚𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙙𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙪𝙥 𝙢𝙮 𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙮.

Unfortunately, I could not for the life of me get into this book. The MC is a drug abusing woman in her 40s who takes a day for herself, like yaaaas let’s go girl BUT ends up with her being a complete jerk. Some of the antics were a little funny but the awfulness of her as a person overshadowed everything redeeming about this book.

The MC was so unlikable and she ended up just being downright nasty. Gave me the ick.

At some point the book sorta read to me like random words on a page. Like I couldn’t keep my brain focused because I was so checked out.
