Grand adventures stories often begin where you least expect them…
Iris knows this because she’s read them all. However, as a thirteen-year-old stuck in the tiny town of Bugden, real adventure seems like a distant dream. But when Iris and her best friend, Sam, stumble upon an unusually dry river on the outskirts of town, they’re led to a discovery beyond anything Iris has ever read about: a hidden city and a forgotten tale of friendship.
In Jason Pamment's middle grade graphic novel debut, perfect for fans of Hilda and This Was Our Pact, can Iris and Sam uncover the truth in time to keep their own friendship afloat, or will history repeat itself and pull them apart forever?

A strong story about friendship that incorporates fantasy and whimsy; fans of “Hilda” and Adventure Time will be charmed. A great addition to any middle school library collection. — School Library Journal
In this graphic novel debut, Australian animator Pamment showcases a sharp eye for architecture, natural settings, and dynamic compositions, allowing rectangular panels to expand, contract, and break form, crashing down or shattering into shards, in this fine-tuned puzzle. — Publishers Weekly
Pamment’s art is intricate and generous, and he proves as sensitive to young readers’ urge for adventure and mystery as he does to the stakes of their friendships and emotional lives. — Booklist

Bugden is a small town where not much seems to happen. The adults seem fine with it but Iris wants to get out of town and have adventures. Her friend Sam doesn’t understand this, but he’s a good friend. When the lake water level drops, exposing a forgotten town, it’s Iris’ chance to explore, but the mysteries may be costly for Iris and Sam if they are not careful.
I really liked this adventure story. The characters are great and so is the art. I think young readers will find this an engaging read.

Review: I really loved this graphic novel! It was absolutely adorable, the artwork was amazing, and I loved the story. I have always wanted to be an explorer and now I'm more inclined to be one after this book lol. I loved the character development, I loved the world building, and the writing was amazing.
The only thing I had issue with is that it took a second to catch up to speed with the characters. It was a little hard to figure out what was the motivation and why they felt it, but I caught on very fast.
Verdict: So cute!! Definitely recommend!
The art in this graphic novel is simply gorgeous! I like the premise of the story and it's a great bonus for early middle grade readers that it's a quick read which can help them feel a reading win.
For my students, it has a bit less text than they are used to in a graphic novel so it will require more inferencing from the illustrations to understand the plot of the story.
