Dear reader,

When we were children, we dreamed of being heroes. We wanted to slay dragons and defeat the monsters that scared us.

As we grew older, we were forced to try and find our monsters. We had been told they would be easy to spot. Monsters had too much teeth, too much fur, too much size.

These were lies. We stopped wanting to be heroes. We started to want to be more, to be too much. We wanted, needed, more than the world could give us. We wanted more than what we were told we should be. We wanted to become monsters.

Dear reader,

I want three things for you as you read these stories. I hope you find a story that brings you joy. I hope you find a story that gives you some discomfort. Finally, I hope you find a story here that makes you too much, that makes you just a little bit monstrous.

May you be enthralled and entertained by my accounts of monsters... and may these stories help you wake up the monster inside.

Let Your Inner Monster Out
This is an excellent short story collection which plays with the concept of monsters and what it means to be monstrous. Laura Diaz de Arce has a way with perspective that allows for investing points of view to observe from and experience. The book is split into three sections Hominum (stories about humans being monstrous), Mutatio (stories about becoming a monster), and Monstrum (stories about monstrous creatures). Below are my favorites in each section.Hominum:Three Beats Per Measure - music as a medium for inherited violenceLa Bruja y El Vendedor OR How Eduardo Found His Heart - A traveling salesman may find love with a rumored witchMutatioPlum Moon - sci-fi exploration horror at its finest, the reveal is amazingChange - What can happen when decisions made of desperation come home to roostMonstrumHardcover, Softcover - A succubus gets involved in local politics when her business and family are threatenedMandibles - You do what you have to do to protect your family.Overall, a chilling, haunting, and funny collection of stories to enjoy.Side Note: I love that this book has matchbook so you can get the kindle version if you buy the physical one.

Monstrosity is an amazing collection of short stories, sexy, shockingly sad, and funny. Laura Diaz De Arce possesses a writing style that conquers the mind's defenses and forces the reader to submit to some wild and frightening subjects. All of the stories are woven with a soul-bearing innocence that forges a relationship with the reader. By the end of the book, I found myself confounded by the unique differences in all of us. A great book for women and a learning experience for men. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for adventure and a little danger...

It was my first read by the author- I generally do not like short stories but I have stumbled across some excellent horror ones previously before reading this book- Most of the tales I wouldn't even classify as horror but there were a couple of really good reads-

Great writing. I know this is a book of short stories but I felt that some were way too short and didn't even wet my appetite. Some of the other stories, however, were the perfect length leaving me full.

I chose this book because of its very unusual blurb, and I am happy that I did. I normally don’t read short stories (I prefer novels) but this is an excellent collection of horror stories which are somehow both chilling and funny. My favorite was the sci-fi themed story (about an android who was a call-girl). The stories are full of unique characters and unpredictable twists and turns. I was hooked from the first page and found it difficult to put the book down. I think horror fans will enjoy reading this book. Highly recommended!

I’m usually not a fan of shorts because I prefer to get into the meat of a story. However. These are written so beautifully!! There’s a primal visceral connection to the ebb and flow of the writing of each collection of chapter stories that draws you in and forces you to take just one more spoon full. The word smithing is next level.

I had to laugh when I read the review calling this book--hmm, WHAT was it? Ah yes, "dirty and perverted"!! I took a chance on this one, as I'd never heard of the author, but WOW! I was SO very GLAD I DID!! Five out of five stars for these HIGHLY ORIGINAL takes on what "monstrous" can mean from a FEMALE viewpoint. But PLEASE don't be put off, gents! My boyfriend TOTALLY dug it TOO.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable set of tales

Good tales but needs occassional edits. In some way, these tales remind me fleetingly of Kelly Link's short stories. I will look for more by this author. If you do not read Spanish, just use the translate function to get the snippets.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Reviewed in Canada on December 27, 2021
The writing was okay and some of the stories were fairly good, but it wasn't as good as I expected it to be from reading the reviews. It wasn't dreadful, but it wasn't great either
For me, the best part was the cover and the title.

A collection of refreshingly different stories in a number of genres.

One star deducted due to a number of proofing errors.
