Now perhaps the world's largest participatory art and science project, the Crochet Coral Reef combines mathematics, marine biology, environmental consciousness-raising and community art practice. Almost 8,000 people around the world have contributed to making an ever-evolving archipelago of giant woolen seascapes, which have been exhibited at the Hayward Gallery, the Smithsonian and many other venues. This fully illustrated book, written by the project's creators--Margaret and Christine Wertheim of the Institute For Figuring--brings together the scientific and mathematical content behind the project, along with essays about the artistic and cultural resonances of this unique experiment in radical craft practice. With a wealth of color illustrations, the book serves as a record of the 30-plus Crochet Reefs worldwide and names all 7,000-plus contributors in a specially designed section.

Having been to see this ever-evolving gallery installation in person, I am really impressed by the accompanying catalogue. The pictures are dynamic and richly coloured, the information relevant and interesting, and the themes coherent to the actual set of work displayed in real life. I definitely recommend this reference for anyone interested in craft work, environmentalism, oceanography, resource management, and cooperative, collaborative installation. It truly applies phenomenally to each and every one of those disciplines.

I knit, I don't crochet but I just love this book and the coral reef project. It is phenominal.

The book is marvelous. It can be purchased for half the cost I paid for it at the Institute for Figuring's homepage. $80 was quite a stretch for me and I regret not going directly to the IFF instead of buying the book here.

This book does not actually contain any crochet patterns, which I found very surprising! I returned it

Das Buch ist sehr informativ und hat eigentlich all meine Erwartungen erfüllt, hätte mir noch ein wenig mehr (Detail-)Bilder und die ein oder andere Vorgehensweise bzw. Anleitung gewünscht.
