"The Yellow Envelope is an uplifting memoir of bravery and self-discovery." ― BookPage

"A memorable adventure..." ―
Kirkus Reviews

"This is a capably narrated, decidedly introspective, soul-searching travel memoir of the Eat, Pray, Love variety and will likely draw the same audience." ―
Booklist

"The
Yellow Envelope is an intriguing and riveting tale of Kim’s travel adventures. I was especially intrigued by her process of self-discovery which is tightly woven into her experiences. She talks openly and honestly about earth-shaking moments, marital doubts, and quiet insights…often in the tone of sharing secrets with a best friend. Also, I loved the idea of the physical "yellow envelope," a gift to be given away "in ways that make you smile and make your heart sing." It’s a story with passion, risk, and humor." ― Rita Golden Gelman, author of Tales of a Female Nomad: Living at Large in the World

"Many readers will enjoy the uplifting moments Dinan experiences during her quest." ―
Publishers Weekly

"If you’re looking for a travel memoir with a unique twist, look to Kim Dinan’s The
Yellow Envelope: One Gift, Three Rules, and a Life-Changing Journey Around the World." ― Bustle

More than a travel memoir!

More than a travel memoir!
Kim weaves such compelling details into her travel tales that her writing instantly transports me to the places she describes. As a fellow traveller, I relate to her stories on SO many levels; reading it often made my heart ache for the freedom of travel and yet also reminded me of the hardships one endures when so far away from home and dependant only on yourself and one other. It's not just about travel though. It's about the introspective work we all put in; whether we travel or not. The discovery of ourselves, our commitments to others, and learning our place in the world. In the end, Kim shows that it all comes down to perspective; the ability to see yourself in the bigger picture and to be grateful for those in your life and for what you have been given (or worked damn hard for). It’s a brave story - so much more than a travel memoir, and well worth a read. It will feed your wanderlust and have you looking deeper in yourself for your own truth.

Wonderfully insightful, fresh, honest writing that will engage you from beginning to end, around the world, as the author journeys through self discovery and beyond. Her genuine and lovable perspectives about relationships and the human experience are so relatable even as she has incredible adventures few of us are brave enough to try.

Her travels are mapped out by country but also by the stages she goes through on the way to understanding herself as an individual and rediscovering and affirming the strength of true love. All in refreshingly relatable, funny, and moving stories about the people and animals she meets on the way.

Most of all it is a story about magic and kindness, and how the gift of giving and receiving makes room for us to love and be loved.

There are so many travel bloggers in the world today who claim to be "writers." What sets Kim apart from those bloggers is the fact that she can actually write. She is very talented when it comes to story telling and it shows in her writing. I've read some insufferable travel books from aspiring authors where I could barely finish the first chapter without suffering through terrible grammar, story structure and endless travel clichés. This is NOT one of those books, although there are a couple of inevitable clichés in the writing, mostly about sunsets. For people interested in long-term travel, this is a good book to read to get a good insight into what that world looks like, but it is much more of a memoir instead of any sort of guidebook. I found myself laughing out loud with enjoyment during some of Kim's stories, like picturing her daily runs with the dogs from an animal shelter while in India: "We were a total freak show: a Western woman and a pack of misfit, disfigured dogs, dodging manure and motorcycles and water buffalo."

As I guy, I found myself not enjoying this book as much as I assume a woman would. It really seems to be geared towards female readers, which is totally fine, but it caused me to enjoy the travel stories less when they were layered in with the female author's internal struggles with her relationship. I think many women in similar situations will absolutely love this book. Single guys, probably not so much.

I commend the author for being open about what she went through during this trip, but it was a bit tough hearing her constantly complain about how unhappy she was. However, she seems to have a pretty incredible sense of self-awareness and didn't hold anything back when criticizing herself for being unhappy for what seemed like petty things. She also seemed to be very fair and honest when portraying things from Brian's(her husband) point of view.

Kim has some really great quotes in this book that I really liked. Here are my three favorites:

"That was the irony of travel. The bigger the distance between you and the familiar grew, the smaller and safer and friendlier the world felt."

"It's only an adventure if we live to tell the tale. Otherwise it's called a tragedy."

Referring to a guy who lived in poverty on an island in Peru: "Maybe Diego never questioned the purpose of his life because he was too busy going about living it."

I followed Kim and Brian's journey - via her blog - for 4 years as they traveled the world so I was aware of the significance of the yellow envelope and the money given to them by friends, with the encouragement to pay it forward as Kim and Brian set out to travel the world. But throughout their travels, Kim never revealed how/when/why they shared the money. Because I followed their journey I knew many of their stories so aside from how they shared the gifts of the yellow envelope, I wasn't sure what I would glean from her book. Kim's honest and heartfelt style of writing had me completely hooked within the first few pages, so much so that I sat and read the entire book in one afternoon. Throughout the pages, Kim not only shares the stories from the yellow envelope, which are sweet and simply profound, she also has the courage to share her personal struggles in coming to terms with who she is and her place in this world. In the style of "Wild" Kim's story is one of self-discovery, wanderlust and love.

I remember a particular passage from Kim's blog, So-Many-Places, in which she wrote she would never be someone who just writes a travelogue. And, that sentiment rings true with The Yellow Envelope; it is not just a travelogue. It is Kim's story told from Kim's heart, and her story touched my heart.

I'd like to challenge the review that this book is geared towards women. Written by a women obviously, but I think any guy who has a sense for adventure or a curiosity about what it takes and what it's like to see the world would totally enjoy this thing. I'm a dude and found this book right up my alley - I couldn't put it down actually - finished it on a 5 day trip to Mexico. I can't say I'm an avid reader and this might be the fastest I've ever finished a book of more than 300 pages (and the most I've teared up reading a book ever).

The author does an incredibly beautiful job at putting you right there with her in the village in Ecuador, on the streets of India, in the mountains of Nepal, the winding landscapes of Vietnam. And although this is a travel memoir, in my opinion, this book is about what it means to give yourself permission to question your life, your purpose. What it means to tell the truth when the truth hurts like hell. This is lesson in the value of real, honest self-exploration. So much more than a travel book.

I wasn't expecting this thing to have me in tears throughout its entirety, but it did. For anyone, male or female, who has a sense of adventure, or might need a nudge in the right direction to take a leap of faith, or just likes brilliantly put together sentences about inspiring travel stories and self-examination, I can't recommend this book enough.

Kudos to the author and her husband for displaying a little more of what this world needs.

This is the best book that I have read in years. I loved it. I loved Kim’s introspection, observations and way of processing it all. I loved her time in India and Nepal. I loved that she became a bigger person and not a smaller person due to her sacrifices. A worthwhile read in my estimation. I was sorry when it ended.

When you can't travel physically; you travel through books. I did exactly that reading through The Yellow Envelope by Kim Dinan.

The Yellow Envelope is a travelogue where the author takes you through her bold decision to quit her job along with her husband, sell everything they owned in the six years of their professional and personal life and go out into the unknown world with lot of nervousness and uncertainties, and little bit of excitement.

Kim was not happy with her life and one day, while on a trail run, she voices her unhappiness into the lonely morning. That is when the truth dawns upon her and she realizes the life she is living is not the life she wants. She wants to travel and write. She confesses her urge to her husband. He relents and they decide to travel. They have been entrusted with an yellow envelope by one of their couple friends which plays a very important role in their self discovery through the journey.

Kim takes you around the world along with her anxieties, vulnerabilities, indecisiveness, and difficulties. The journey which starts as a desire to see the world becomes a path to self discovery, love, compassion and kindness.

I still am jetlagged post a beautiful tour of the world with Kim.

Isn't that a big part of why most of us don't follow our dream? Love how this couple followed their hearts and lived life as it could be. Mostly I thank them for sharing the experiences in their journey on a travellers view and a personal level. Wonderful book!
