Literary Nonfiction. Asian & Asian American Studies. The orphan at the center of LITANY FOR THE LONG MOMENT is without homeland and without language. In three linked lyric essays, Arnold attempts to claim her own linguistic, cultural, and aesthetic lineage. Born in Korea and adopted to the US as a child, she explores the interconnectedness of language and identity through the lens of migration and cultural rupture. Invoking artists, writers, and thinkers—Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Francesca Woodman, Susan Sontag, among others—LITANY FOR THE LONG MOMENT interweaves personal documents, images, and critical texts as a means to examine loss and longing.

Who are we? This vital question turns inside out and back again in Kim's hands. Holding this book in my own hands and looking long and hard at the photos interspersed throughout, was for me a tactile and emotional experience. Fitting for a book that charts loss and longing. Kim uses the few existing artifacts (a letter, a photo, a document) from her early life in Korea, along with excerpts from critics, poets, and artists, to view the relationship between mothers and daughters, posited here as a moving dance between absence and presence. This book is a beautiful and courageous work of art.

An affecting and inventive exploration of adoption, identity, and the life fragments we work to make sense of. Moving and innovative. This is Arnold's story--what she knows, what she can't know, what she has to imagine--about being born in Korea and adopted in the U.S. This short, rich, rewarding book stays with you.

Had to buy and read for lit class, wasn’t my cup of tea, but it was pretty interesting. I guess depends on your taste. But it’s a short book, and is pretty interesting

Litany for the Long Moment was a very moving and thoughtful work that reflected inwardly and outwardly. On the surface, the narrative seems to wrestle with two general subjects: subject versus object and mother and daughter relationships. However, it also delves into much more specific cases such as the death of a mother (an adopted one), language as identity marker/maker, previous selves, etc. I appreciated the intertextuality and hybridity of the writing that utilizes Arnold's personal artifacts. Among many other beautifully written ones, I'm still drawn to the line "Holding fragments is not the same as making a broken thing whole--..."
