Mary Ziegler, a law professor at UC Davis School of Law, is one of the leading historians of the US abortion debate and the author of 4 books, including Dollars for Life: The Anti-Abortion Movement and the Fall of the Republican Establishment (Yale, 2022), Abortion and the Law in America (Cambridge, 2020), and the award-winning After Roe: The Lost History of the Abortion Debate. She speaks frequently with the media, including the Atlantic, Fox News, MSNBC, the New Republic, New York Times, NPR, and the Washington Post, She lives with her family in California. I wish I didn't have to say this because I love and respect this author. But this book disappointed me. The other professional reviews mentioned that the answer can be found in the "meaning of Roe itself." That's why I bought the book. But I found no explanation or even the author's opinion of the "meaning of Roe." Instead there is an exhaustive list of legal case after legal case highlighting both sides of the issue. And how it has evolved over the years. Apparently it will continue in the same vein as nothing has been resolved. I think the issue is complicated by the status of women themselves. This world is full of killing: by guns, by war, by poverty etc. Yet, it is only this "killing" that somehow sticks in the craw because it is done by women who are putting their own lives first. I can only attribute this outrage to the lack of respect for women themselves. All the opinions both pro and con were patronizing in one way or another. In reality, the woman herself is the only one who knows what is best in her own situation. I have a hard time understanding why it is anyone else's business. I was hoping to hear Zigler's opinion, but it was not in this book.
