- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2013I was vaguely familiar with the name of the American writer Washington Irving, until I read a small plaque on a wall in one of the rooms of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. The plaque said the author had lived in that room and had written "Tales of the Alhambra" during his stay in the Palace Fortress. A few years later I came across the book, and then I realized the need to revisit the place an enjoy it, this time, through the eyes of a very talented writer. Some of those stories, fables, and myths are presented again in more detail in his historic epic
"Chronicles of the Conquest of Granada". The lengthy book is very entertaining, despite the fact that it is a narration of one battle after another, but the narrative is so vivid, and the prose so poetic, that the reader gets immersed in the story, and he pages fly very fast. Of particular interest is the way Isabella of Aragon, the Catholic Queen, is portrayed as the brain behind the extraordinary achievements of Spain during her reign. Another example of Irving's creativity is the way he describes the unique characteristics of each campaign, and the different approaches followed by the two rival armies. Those of us privileged enough to have visited Granada, Malaga, Ronda, and Southern Andalucía, really enjoy the details that abound of castles, topography and villages, described with so much accuracy and love. After reading these two books, I cannot wait to visit again that blessed land of the Moors and the Spaniards. JAS
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2015I found this book very interesting, glad I did not live in this period. I love Spain and after reading this book may go back and visit some of the sights listed in it. History is always interesting.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2019When you hear Washington Irving you immediately think, Halloween and the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. But who knew he spent time in Spain digging into the early history surrounding King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, the chivalrous Knights and the legends of the surrounding their reclaiming lands lost hundreds of years earlier to African invaders. Thinking I'd read a few pages then move to one of my typical mysteries, I devoted many nights, to the Knights in 100 chapters. A beautiful book to read, and now I'm on to Irving's other book, Tales of the Alhambra.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2014The book is excellent. Well written. Easy to follow. The pretense of being authored by Agrapida is unnecessary, and adds nothing.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2015Written in 1829 by Washington Irving, the genre of this book is called "Romantic History". The story is based in fact, embellished to make it read more like a novel. The result is a more accessible history read. Recommended for those interested in the subject or who have traveled to Spain.
I reccomend you wikipedia Washington Irving before you read it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2013Read and when you visit the Alhambra and Malaga region and you will truly value the places you see. Yeah!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2014It makes the history come alive, and makes me want to go back and see all these localities that are almost "nowhere" now. While I studied "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" in school, I didn't know what I was missing by not reading all his writings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chronicle of the conquest of Granada
Brillante descripcion novelada de la historia con elementos ciertos, aunque no todos. Contado desde el lado cristiano pero con ecuanimidad

5.0 out of 5 stars Old but fascinating
I'm really interested in Granada and this was a very interesting read. Highly recommended. Well written, even though it's stuffed with detail

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting
This is an interesting historical account but the language is quite old fashioned which makes comprehension quite difficult at times, particularly where the text has been translated from Spanish historians of the 15 century. The book was read following a fascinating visit to Granada and the Alhambra which helped bring the book to life.
