Review

"A Kentucky teen survives clinical death only to discover supernatural abilities and a startling history in Faye's YA debut. Sophomore Ember O'Neill hopes this high-school year will be better than the last. Sadly, she remains a social pariah who's mercilessly mocked and bullied ("look at how she dresses. She's like an old lady"). Ember has a few people on her side, like her loyal pal, Erick Grossman, and the new girl he's befriended, Hallee Wilson. But that doesn't stop a bully from pulling a prank that technically kills her—for 20 minutes—before paramedics revive her. She subsequently learns that the prescription pills she's long been taking may have been stunting her abilities; Ember has superhuman strength and speed (and something even more astonishing). Clarification as to where her powers stem from may lie with Adam, the mysterious guy who keeps popping up in her dreams. Meanwhile, her social status gets a tweak as she stands up to her bullies with renewed vigor and catches the eye of more than one boy, including the just-transferred Logan Lauder. Faye aptly blends supernatural elements with the realities of adolescence as Ember struggles to adjust to her body's changes. There are other relatable turns as well, from her possible pill addiction to her mother's excessive drinking. As this is likely the start of a series, the story introduces numerous questions involving such things as an ancient order of assassins, visions of archangel Michael, and Ember's family. Mostly, it's a fully engaging teen drama—Ember juggles romantic possibilities, including an older guy, and, as an "outcast," she is understandably wary of others. The snobs and bullies at school make great villains, while endearing companions such as Erick, Hallee, and her "oversized" dog, Bear, consistently and wholeheartedly alleviate the tension. Riveting adolescent melodrama powers this remarkable urban fantasy with series potential." — Kirkus Reviews

I knew nothing about this author going into this book. I’d never heard of her, didn’t know what her writing style was like or anything about her. Didn’t read any reviews of her other books, just went in completely blind with no expectations about anything. And I enjoyed the experience as well. It was a bit repetitive in places with the descriptions of things, the auras specifically, but it was something that I could gloss over for the most part. There were other little things that repeated a couple times through the book that had me going, “There’s that sentence again.” But I also know a lot of writers have a fall back sentence that they like to use a lot, so I get it.

The characters were all likeable, except for Birdie. I didn’t like her at all, not even a little. Ember got on my nerves a few times, but I got a sense that maybe she was supposed to. I could sympathize with her since I got teased relentlessly at school as well. I adored Hallee when she showed up, thought Ember’s relationship with Erick was adorable. Keep bouncing between the three guys on who I like more, I can’t pick and you can’t make me. Don’t make her, just make it a why chose.

I got a little lost at times with the time changes since they weren’t really labeled but I managed to figure it out as I went along. The pacing of things were really nice. It didn’t go too fast or too slow. Things weren’t thrown at you at an overwhelming rate to leave you experiencing information overload. It was a nice, steady pace. I did keep wondering throughout it if it was going to continue into another book and I’m glad to see that it is because I would happily read another book of these characters.

I look forward to the next book in the series! I’ll be keeping an eye out for it!

This YA fantasy brings together the angst of teens with the possibility of angels and demons fighting a battle to save this world.

Ember is an outcast for many reasons, mainly because teenagers can be mean. But she has a plan for her sophomore year, which includes a female best friend, a boyfriend, and being popular. It can be a daunting task, considering how her freshman year turned out, but she isn't going to let it stop her.  Luckily, she has one good friend, Erick, and the addition of Hallee. This trio of friends can take on the world or at least try.

Ember is a relatable character. She might resonate with anyone who felt like an outcast in school. But as time goes on, she grows and becomes more confident in herself. It was really cool watching her become someone who could be looked up to or admired by other classmates.

As the story progresses, we learn more about a few secret societies and their desire to take out those they consider unworthy. It is hard to know who is working on what side, and I had my suspicions, but I wasn't right on everything.

I enjoyed this story and had a hard time putting it down. I tried to work out the motives of the different characters but didn't quite get them right. Or at least not all of them. I found myself rooting for some characters and wishing others would turn their attitude around.

The book did end too soon for me, and while there are some tragic moments in the final buildup of this book, there are still so many unanswered questions. I believe there will be a sequel to this book, and I hope so. I want to discover what Ember is up to and how the battle progresses.

We give this book 5 paws up.

This was a very good book and I enjoyed the local feeling from the places the author spoke about. I certainly look forward to more from this author!

Interesting story line accompanies believable teen-aged characters (insecure hell girls and tool boys and a few nice people) in this supernatural YA book. Ember needs to learn fast how to stay alive while helping as many of her friends as as she can in the process. And Ember has a big problem with being an outcast and bullied. All that changes, of course, so things do improve for her. But dang, she has a helluva mission... Hard to focus on school and said mission when her mom sucks. The yucky old skank that she is. Which means we'll probably find out later she is a victim and we have to pity her. So Ember doesn't have a great home life but she figures out how to navigate stuff pretty well, considering her circumstances.
Of course, Dead Girl ends on a note of suspense so I gotta read the next book. The writing is a bit odd in places but overall, a good read. 3.5 stars

Our Review: All of us have known the Mean Girls [and guys] in our world. Whether they infested high school, college/grad school, or the business worlds, they possessed that one quality that made us feel like nothing, less than. This why Dead Girl and its characters is relatable on a variety of levels—and makes you want to stand up and cheer. So get ready for the ride of your life as you watch Ember and her two best friends form a bond that leads them on an adventure worthy of All American heroes. For a first novel, author Faye has done a terrific job, and we wait for the next in her Dead Girl adventures.
Based on a scale of 1-5, Dead Girl merits a 6.
