I was slightly doubtful for the first five pages, but after that I was hooked. The characters are so much more than they first appear, and their relationships are deep and sometimes difficult. There's a lot of intriguing mystery and fascinating glimpses into Chinese folklore and beliefs. I was sad when it ended, not just for the difficulties the two main characters faced, but because I was truly enjoying the book. The next book in the series is coming out in three months and I am going to pre-order it today. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys unique and complex romance.

Guardian is an excellent urban fantasy with a heavy dose of romance. I would say this is probably one of priest's most romance-focused stories, so keep that in mind. Even though it is the most romance focused there is still excellent world-building and plot progression. This is one of the better translations from Seven Seas, though not perfect.

It's got great pacing, good characterization, and doses of humor. There are some really nice explanations on different cultural beliefs throughout the story, so for someone who has not had a lot of exposure to folklore, Taoism, Buddhism, etc, this is a good place to start. Sometimes jumping into wuxia and xainxia novels can be hard because readers may not have had any explanation of those topics because there is an assumption that if you're reading those types of novels, you already know.

Zhao Yunlan is brash, more than a little bit of an *ssh*le, and is highly opinionated of himself and very opinionated (not always nicely) towards others. Shen Wei is a good contrast to him, and it will be fun to see his character get teased out over the trilogy. One of the things I enjoy about priest's writing is their ability to portray very real and very flawed individuals.

It's not without some issues with how priest approached certain things in the story, but I am overall looking forward to the next book.
