Holly Black’s The Cruel Prince meets Jennifer Donnelly's Stepsister in this fairytale reimagining about a kingdom on the brink of ruin, and one wicked stepsister’s journey to become the heroine of her own quest.

Aralyn has lost everything - the coveted glass slipper, the prince's hand in marriage, and her only chance to save her mother and sister from destitution. Now she spends her days sweeping the cinders and washing dresses as her stepsister Ellarose once did, plotting her revenge against the girl who robbed her of her future.

But when Ellarose, now the princess, comes to beg her help with saving the kingdom from ruin, Aralyn sees the opportunity to seize everything she's ever wanted. She discovers a prophecy, an ancient blade from the original fairy godfather of the kingdom of Novador that could restore the kingdom to its former prosperity. She's determined to find the missing pieces of the blade and use its power for her own gain, even if it means dragging her bumbling fairy godmother and an annoying lady knight along with her.

But as Aralyn has to put her trust in others to survive the challenges of retrieving each lost piece of the blade, she begins to question everything her mother has taught her about surviving in life. Maybe the prince was never the key to her future, and maybe she'll have to fight to find her own happily ever after.

Review

An adventure for those who haven’t yet found their fairy-tale ending. Now that Cinderella has married the prince, her older stepsister, Aralyn, has been forced to take on the household chores. Cinderella, now going by Princess Ellarose, seeks out Aralyn, who has had the benefit of an extensive education, for assistance with troubling diplomatic matters. The two discover a royal coup is brewing. When Aralyn’s ambitious mother decides to cut her losses and take her younger daughter, Divya, to a neighboring kingdom in pursuit of a suitor, abandoned Aralyn makes a desperate wish and meets her own fairy godmother, Lyra. Tall, fur-clad, and purple-skinned, Lyra reveals the existence of an ancient fey weapon that may be powerful enough to save the kingdom and get Aralyn back in good social standing. Aralyn and Vee, Ellarose’s loyal knight, set off together to find the three scattered pieces of the weapon, traveling through the danger-filled Mortel Mountains, ominous Silent Forest, and the Impassable Sea. At first mutually antagonistic, the two young women realize their overly demanding, abusive parents have given them similar outlooks on life. The worldbuilding is so expanded that the story’s fairy-tale origins add little; still, this is an interesting journey of self-discovery with plenty of magic, action, an enemies-to-lovers romance, and a strongly developed theme of becoming your own person despite your origins. Main characters are cued White. An entertaining jaunt. (Fantasy. 13-18)- Kirkus (Apr 15, 2023)

In the aftermath of Prince Fael’s search for a girl who fits a glass slipper, the chosen bride's stepsister seeks revenge for a number of slights, both real and imagined. When the new princess, Ellarose, is crowned, she finds that the royal family seems uninterested in actually running the kingdom of Novador, and she needs help to ensure the castle and the kingdom’s subjects don’t starve. Ellarose turns to her stepsister Aralyn, who was trained by the best diplomats money could buy, and Aralyn agrees to help while secretly plotting her revenge. Things become infinitely more difficult when Aralyn’s long-lost fairy godmother appears, and they learn that Divya, Ellarose's other stepsister, is intent on marrying a prince in a deadly rival kingdom. The godmother sends Aralyn and a captain of the royal guard off into the mountains to find a magical weapon that could solve all of their problems, but is it even real? This unusual take on the Cinderella story will appeal to fans of the popular Twisted Tales series. Grab it for any collection.— Stacey Comfort-

When her stepsister, EllaRose, won over the prince, Aralyn lost everything, including her family’s chance at getting out of destitution. Since Ella’s departure, Aralyn’s mother has turned her abusive behavior on her. When diplomatic relations become strained, EllaRose enlists Aralyn’s help to find an ancient fey weapon that is the kingdom’s last hope of survival. While EllaRose enlists her help to find the weapon, Aralyn’s mother and sister are brewing some trouble of their own. Can Aralyn live up to her stepsister’s trust in her and save the kingdom? Will she find a way to stop her family from destroying everything?

A fractured fairy tale of Cinderella, the plot is well-developed and enchanting. The characters are easy to relate to and bring the world to life. The world building is engaging and well-done. Fans of fairytale retellings, fantasy, and adventure will want to pick this one up. Recommended for most library collections

This story picks up where Cinderella (Ellarose) lets off. Ellarose's stepsister, Aralyn, must fight to save the kingdom with the help of Ellarose's guard, Vee. The only problem is that Vee and Aralyn do not get along.
Opinion
I was fortunate enough to listen to the audio book and have a copy of the e-book to read along. The narration was magical. The fairy godmothers had voices you would expect of the fae. Vee, a soldier, had a tough sounding voice and Aralyn's voice was also perfect. I believe the audio book was done with perfection.
The plot of the story follows the hero's journey. (If you don't know what that is, google it.) I was kept captivated, wondering what was coming next. I believe this book to be perfect for middle grade students and life long fans of fairy tales. Moke's ideas of what could have happened next were both magical and if possible with fairy tales, logical.
Many thanks to Net Galley, Disney Publishing and Disney Audiobooks for providing me with an ARC of this book.

This read more like a Middle Grade novel to me than a Young Adult book. Though I loved the idea of seeing it from the evil sister's perspective, I found Aralyn to be insufferable and petty, even with all the hints that EllaRose actually did love her as a sister (even after all they did to her). I liked Vee, although sometimes her "tough girl" act was a bit much, and EllaRose sometimes struck me as not very smart. I did love that all three women showed their different strengths and those strengths help them achieve the ultimate goal of saving the kingdom.

Overall for me it wasn't bad but it wasn't great. I think there will be plenty of people who will enjoy this more than I did.

Thanks to NetGalley & Disney Publishing for this ARC.

Take the classic tale of Cinderella and flip it upside down. It's told from the viewpoint of Aralyn, older stepsister who has been as much a prisoner of her mother as was Cinderella, now married to the prince and known as Ellarose. Aralyn spent her life readying to be the princess, learning economics, government, history, etc. in preparation, only to be dropped from favor so her younger sister can take that spot.
When Ellarose seeks her out to help save the kingdom, it's tempting to hold to her Machiavellian mindset, but as she comes to understand the level of toxic corruption threatening the kingdom, she can't ignore it. Neither can she ignore the way her attraction to the prickly knight Vee, daughter of perhaps the most corrupt member of the king's council, keeps growing.
Add in three nearly impossible quests, a very unorthodox fairy godmother, plus lots of action and you have a compulsive page-turner. Great work, Jenny!

I really enjoyed this book! It was so fun, and I'm a big fan of this writer. I was engaged from start to finish, and I could not put this one down. I hope Disney Publishing continues to work with this author!

Thank you for an advanced copy! I loved the characters, the plot, the pacing...literally everything!

A cute twist on what happens to Cinderella’s family after the end of her fairytale. I enjoyed seeing Aralyn discover what’s important to her and reflect on how her mother’s treatment shaped who she is. Aralyn embarks on a quest with lady knight Vee, who has preconceived notions of her. They have a contentious relationship but must overcome it for the sake of others. If you like fairytale retellings and adventures, then I recommend reading this.

Ever wonder what happened with Cinderella and her kingdom after she marries the Prince? Here's your chance to find out.
In A Spark in the Cinder's, Ellarose's stepmother has not given up on her evil machinations. But do her daughters have to follow in her evil footsteps?
Filled with epic quests through mountains, seas, and forests, this is an adventurous read for any fairy tale lover out there.
There is wonderful character development and growing friendships too.

Thanks to Netgalley and Disney Hyperion for an early copy for review.

This was an absolute delight!!! I am always down for a fairy tale retelling, but this was brilliant. A tale of redemption and found family, A Spark in the Cinders is downright creative with its world building of fey and royal courts. I couldn’t get enough of Vee and Aralyn and their journey and Moke does what few authors recently are not doing - she concludes the story. I immense satisfaction I had at the resolution makes this a must on my own shelf, not just my class library.

I eagerly am looking forward to the reread. The small details (like the foreshadowing of the prophecy) were amazing to see come together at the end.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC. These are my own thoughts.
