The author does a great job of immersing you in the world, with vivid descriptions and spot on details that make you feel like you're right there alongside the protagonist.
One of the highlights of the book is the character development. As the story progresses, they grow and evolve, both in terms of their skills and their personality. It's really satisfying to see their progression!
In conclusion, "Traveller's Trial: An Isekai LitRPG Adventure" is an entertaining and immersive book that will appeal to fans of isekai and LitRPG stories. If you're looking for a thrilling virtual reality adventure with engaging characters and a well-developed world, I highly recommend giving it a read. Happy reading!
I've not had a ton of experience with the LitRPG genre, but PF tends to lend itself to the format, so I was looking forward to it. As a primarily fantasy and PF reader, I would say that this was the biggest factor in my overall impression and enjoyment of the book and has me wondering about the "next steps."
The entirety of Traveller's Trial is spent in a psuedo-video game scenario. Characters have something roughly equivalent to a unique "class," but it doesn't dictate their available choices for skills, spells, etc. It only defines synergies between them. Much of the development seems to either be random chance or possibly some kind of outside interference. Most often, Koji seems to "fail upwards" with his selections and loot. So, as a reader, it can be hard to anticipate how characters' builds will develop and try to "play along" with them. If you're the type that wants to self-insert as a min-maxing power-gamer to try to plan out what your choices would be in their place, this might not be the story for you as both the system and the main character, Koji, will definitely deny you that opportunity. However, if you enjoy the unexpected and a more laid-back approach to observing skill growth and combinations, Traveller's Trial will be a great match for you.
As I said, I'm usually a fantasy and PF reader, so throughout my reading, I was waiting for the "big picture plot" to arrive. Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that this book is really a prelude to the larger world and story. It serves as a foundation for the system, the characters, and their starting points. It sets up for the next in the series to expand while keeping its own scope well-defined so that there's a clear ending to this arc.
Nevertheless, I found the system itself intriguing, with many possibilities for future shenanigans if Koji can ever get his act together, take his new life and the mechanics seriously, and take a more active role in his own skill development. In some ways, it reminded me of Dungeon Crawler Carl in that the spells and skills are narrative, unique, and defined by a "system entity" rather than a "class path." I'm also excited to see the characters other than Koji get more development and screen-time that isn't under duress. Koji definitely has a lot of social and emotional growth to do, and I'd be happy to see him grow closer with his companions, and in the process, get to know them better. I get the impression there's more to them than meets the eye in this installment.
Overall, I give it a 4/5 stars. If the sequel entries in the series are well executed and build on the foundation Traveller's Trial set, it will easily bump up to a 4.5/5.
