The devil has moved in next door. The devil has seen me naked. The devil has the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen.

God-fearing Rebecca Briar was raised to believe that her community, her parents, and her church know best. That if she follows the rules, one day she’ll be able to choose for herself. Yet after an irresistible stranger moves in next door, she begins to suspect that the rules she’s lived by weren’t there to keep her safe. They were there to control her.

Hardened and lonely James Walton has five rules for a reason—he has promises to keep and ambitions to move to San Francisco to become a rockstar. But when he notices prim and proper Rebecca Briar’s quiet anguish through his window, he is tempted to break every one of his rules to help her, consequences be damned.

Their connection is undeniable, but with God watching her every move and secrets belonging to a past James never got to learn, all they can hope for are a few months of fun before it’s all over.

Except nothing is ever that simple.

A Song of Sin and Salvation is a steamy, slow burn romance that will mercilessly pull on your heartstrings. It’s a story about freedom, choice and first love, all set to a raucous 80s soundtrack. It features two lonely teens who despite their differences, represent each other’s chance at salvation.

𝑨 𝑺𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝑶𝒇 𝑺𝒊𝒏 𝑨𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒂𝒍𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 🎸 by L. H. BlakeMy favorite read of 2023 so far 🥰🥹Rebecca is a high school senior that has lived her life by the book (literally). Coming from a very strict religious family and promised to marry a boy from her church since she was young, there’s never been much room for Rebecca to question anything. But when a new bad boy with long hair and loud music moves into the house next door to hers, he suddenly makes her question everything. James might be the first person in Rebecca’s life to truly see her, and certainly the only person that’s ever cared. It’s too bad this small town is just a short stop on his journey. He’s just here to finish up his senior year, earn his diploma, and run straight to California to start his music career. He’s laid out a set of rules for himself so he won’t lose sight of his goals. But Becks…she might just make him break them all.I can’t even explain how much I loved this book. I died over the 80s vibes and playlist (obviously). Rebecca was a character I so personally related to a James was a book boyfriend that made my heart just explode. If you’ve ever been a person that felt like you didn’t belong or has just desperately felt (with much guilt) that you wanted nothing more than to break free, this book is for you. Also…if you were one of those people whose hearts broke over never getting to see Eddie and Chrissy’s story play out in Stranger Things…you absolutely need to pick this one up.I can’t wait to see what this author has in store next!

Where do I begin with this book!? I loved every page of this book! I started to read this book, seeing it was going around Twitter and saying it was like Hellcheer. I read it because of that, but the story and the characters stand alone! It was a beautiful book that made me happy. I was crying at the happy ending these two love birds got!

This is where I'm going into the spoilers: READ AT YOUR OWN RISK

Now, there were three issues I had with the book:

The biggest one was when it came to light that Eric was gay. Don't get me wrong, the twist was. Tremendous and shocking. But it felt a little odd. During the entire time first 75 percent of the book, we are made to hate Eric and see him as a jerky jock. Like him trying to get Rebecca to do certain things. I love a good twist, but this one felt out of place. Like we were hating Eric the entire time, and then, oh, he's gay, by the way. I was hoping he would be just this massive jerk who wanted a perfect wife, and that was it. Maybe I would have liked the twist more if the character was given a bit more detail.

My second issue was that ballet was maybe mentioned in the book a handful of times. I thought we would get to explore that side of Rebecca. Yes, there are a few chapters where it goes into detail. We see how James’ entire personality is wrapped around him wanting to be a rockstar. But with Rebecca, it felt just like an added detail.

My third issue with the book was Dora’s back story. It was the last chapter that confused me. Dora was a drug user in the book. And then, at the end of the book, it says she died from aids. Which just confused me. The way the story is written is that she was sick from all the drug taking. It was just an odd detail that threw me off. Because it never mentioned it before. It wasn't obvious.

These are just my little critics of the book.

I wonder if the author would give a spin-off of Eric's story. And what happened to him? Because he does get a bit of a redemption arc, and I want to know what happened after graduation. Like, did he come out, or did he disappear?

All in all, the book was great! Besides a few confusing points, I thoroughly enjoyed the book! I can't wait to read the rest of this beautiful series!

This is my first book by this author and has me wondering why I haven't discovered L.H. Blake sooner. So many emotions in this book. Actual tears were falling along with the characters.

The fmc in this book, Rebecca, is a very religious girl and lives with her parents who have drilled in her head that she needs to keep herself pure and for her to serve a man, that that's a woman's place. The chirch of this community have drilled this in everyone who goes there. She fears for everything she does that God won't forgive her. Her mom pretty much tortures her too. Her boyfriend forgets about her sometimes and doesn't treat her right either.

In comes a new boy next door, James, who has longer hair and wears metal band shirts and people believe is satanic. James has moved in with his aunt to finish high school to fulfill a request. His dream is to become a guitarist gor a band and play thrash metal. He sees Rebecca one evening in his window and is intrigued. Rebecca sees him too and starts to have feelings that she isn't sure of. He's everything she's been taught is wrong.

Such a heart wrenching, beautiful story. I loved reading this. Makes you feel things and was done so wonderfully. Definitely recommend this book.

First things first, I started reading this book and I was immediately like “wow this is very religious what the heck did I pick up?” But honest to God (😉), I am SO glad I gave it a chance because I absolutely loved it by the end! I hadn’t read anything by @lhblake.author before so I didn’t know what to expect. But I will definitely be keeping an eye out for what she has coming out next.

After James and Becca “meet” for that first time I was intrigued. And it only got hotter from there and had me dying to read more and get more in depth to their stories. Becca grew up in this super religious and strict family. And I hated her parents right off the bat. @lhblake.author did a fabulous job of incorporating these cult-ish like religions and their church community into this story and I actually loved it.

James is the bad boy to Becca’s good girl life and attitude. And I absolutely adored watching her break down piece by piece and come to the dark side.

She had so much trauma to get over and my heart broke several times over for her and her situation. But that made the ending and her growth that much sweeter. James had some growing and healing to do on his own as well, and his path did not disappoint me either. And the one thing he did that he shouldn’t have, well, I’m glad he did because it was well deserved!

I loved that the heavy topics of this book were spaced out between fun banter and the chemistry between characters. It made it easier to get through the tough moments, and look forward to that perfect ending where you just breathed a big ole sigh of relief and happiness for them.

I highly recommend everyone read this book if you are intrigued by:

Ok ok ok…. So I read this after reading the sequel, A Duet of Darkness & Dreams first…there are no rules in reading people! This book, like the sequel, was just everything!

Reading the story between Becks & James was so wonderful. I loved seeing how James & Becks evolved from semi adversaries to partners in everything. Everything Becks has to deal with her controlling parents & church life was so heart breaking. But seeing James care for her & mostly seeing Becks grown into her own was amazing. I love how L.H. Blake delves into heavy topics, while still having those sweet & cute moments.

I can count on one hand the number of books that have made my heart physically squeeze & two of them are from the Carnal Sins series. Another beautiful story from L.H. Blake, I can’t recommend this enough!

Tho this book is long (514 pages!), I thoroughly enjoyed it. I haven’t read a book quite likes this one before, and I loved it! James has my heart forever 🫶🏻♥️ and I felt so so much for the situation Rebecca found herself in.

This book focuses heavily on deconstructing religious trauma (please read/proceed with caution if this is triggering for you). I grew up, and still go to church and believe in God. But holy moly- the things that happened in this book- by the hands of Rebecca’s own parents primarily, I could not believe it. While what happened to Rebecca is very much a reality for a lot of people, I am thankful that wasn’t the case for me. However, this book does an EXCELLENT job at showcasing how you can (slowly) recover from this type of trauma. Find yourself again and love yourself, and find people who love you for who you are, not for how they think God will perceive you.

This book is like a textbook version of how NOT to be the most awful parents to a teenage girl. Seriously- I don’t think. I have ever detested parents as much as I have Rebecca’s. While us as readers are made to feel this way about them, I just cannot fathom that kind of abuse. Again, this is probably a sad reality for people who are personally dealing with this.

James is the new guy in town. The resident bad boy, who is attributed to being the devil. Then how come he is the ONLY person who can see that Rebecca is struggling and not happy?! Underneath the tattoos and long hair and bad boy reputation, James truly has a heart of cold. But doesn’t think he deserves any kind of happiness, or that anyone he loves would ever stay with him, due to his past.

I loved this book, and it’s content, tho hard to read, is so important. Highly recommend!

My most favourite scene is when Rebecca reads all the “things I never said” letters from James 🥹🫶🏻♥️

If I could, I would give this book 10 stars. I was so invested in their story and finished it in half a day. This is an amazing book that I am going to buy as well for my bookshelf.

I wish I could read it all over again for the first time. But I am not worried - I will come back and read it many more times ❤️

When I randomly signed up for an advanced reader's copy of L.H. Blake's novel "A Duet of Darkness and Dreams" (The sequel book to this one), I never thought I'd find my new favourite book ever. Or my new favourite author ever. I am in love with the L.H. Blake's writing style, some authors have such a way with words that make you feel absolutely everything the characters are feeling. If you are considering picking this book up, be ready to have your heart be shattered and put together again by an 80's rockstar named James. 💗

I was absolutely obsessed with Rebecca & James and their journey to their happily ever after. It was inspiring, funny and just absolutely amazing overall. I haven't read a book in a very long time that really had me hooked like this one. If I could give this book one million stars, I would. 🌟

Rebecca is a classic good girl, doing anything and everything to make her demanding parents and church proud. When a wannabe-rockstar who's just here for his diploma turns up in her close-knit town.. her world is about to be rocked. 🎀

James just wants to be a rockstar, that's it. But he wants to make his mom proud by getting his high school diploma, her final wish to him. It's just two months of school in an overly christian town, he'll survive. But when he sees the blonde girl next door dancing naked through his window, things might get a little interesting after all. 🎸

LH Blake's book is set against the backdrop of high school senior year in the 1980s. It centres around Rebecca, who has grown up indoctrinated in the teachings of the conservative and traditional Holy Grace Church, and James, who moves to the school to finish high school after his Mum passes away.
Blake's thoughtful descriptions of the way Rebecca is controlled draw the reader in, with the use of food and clothing evoking feelings of restriction that she experiences. Immediately, we feel a kinship with Rebecca. It is clear there are cracks in her beliefs and that she is deeply unhappy, and I was eager to see how she would grow.
James is introduced from Rebecca's perspective as everything that the church stands against. She initially perceives him as an embodiment of the devil. Despite his aversion to the strict religious teachings of Rebecca's church, he consistently demonstrates empathy and kindness towards her. James could have been aloof and condescending, but Blake chose to write a far more interesting character.
It would be easy to fall into the trappings of "man saves opressed woman" at this point. However, Blake crafts a far more complex plot, affording Rebecca control over her narrative. James shows her kindness, and it is through this kindness that she grows into herself. Ultimately, Rebecca is saving herself.
The plot is character driven, with the gentle erosion of the beliefs Rebecca thought were truths and James' realisation that, perhaps, he can rely on some people. Where tropes of miscommunication are used, they are fitting both to the setting and age of our protagonists. I think this book is so moving because it is so believable, and because the life Rebecca is born to- one where she is expected to be submissive to men, yet is simultaneously responsible for their actions- is all too real. It is a heart wrenching read, but there is also hope throughout it for better times ahead.
Having been completely unfamiliar with this author prior to reading this, I can now say she is one of my favourites. I cannot wait to see what else she writes.
An easy 5 stars.

If I could give this book more than five stars, I would. I would give it all the stars I possibly could. 💖

I genuinely believed if I had a few days to recover after reading this book, then the right words would make their appearance and would do this book justice. I definitely underestimated how magical this story was going to be, because those right words I was hoping would pop up? They're still not here. And I don't want to wait any longer, so here goes.

First and foremost, a huge thank you to L.H. Blake for writing this masterpiece of a book! Honestly, this is one of the most beautiful, amazing, fantastic books I have ever read. So a big thank you to the author. ❤️

A Song of Sin and Salvation is not like any books I read before. Honestly, from the blurb to Sinful Sundays to the sneak peeks the author spoiled us with I knew I would enjoy this read, but I didn't know I would fall so deeply in love with it.

I read it in one day. I was hooked from the very first page and for the love of me I simply could not put it down! But you know what? On one hand I didn't put it down for a second, but on the other hand I wanted so badly that it wouldn't end since I couldn't even fathom the moment I would have to say goodbye to Rebecca and James. Truth be told, the simple thought of a farewell made me sad and anxious. I love them so much it hurts. I love them so much that even days after finishing A Song of Sin and Salvation I miss them and I don't know what to do with this void in my heart now that they are "gone".

Both characters are so lovable and sweet; they couldn't be more different from one another, but you care deeply for both of them all the same.
This book addresses important and heavy topics and believe me when I say it made me feel so many feelings at once: I got angry to the point I nearly saw red, I cried from both sadness and happiness, my heart ached in ways I didn't think it could. I felt so protective of the characters throughout the book I literally wanted to jump into the book itself like Harry does in the HP and the Chamber of Secrets so that I could shield them from all the mad, bad and ugly.

A Song of Sin and Salvation is perfect in all and every single way. The storyline, the banter, the pace, the chemistry between the characters. It had me on edge until the very end and I loved every second of it!
Also, James? Love him! Love him very much. And you will love him too, very very much. If everyone at the age of 18 had a James in their lives, the world and life itself would be a total bliss.

This book is not only one of my favourite reads of 2023, it became one of my favourite books of all time. And it for sure enters the category of "books I wish I could read again for the first time", because oh how I wish I met Rebecca and James for the first time again. 🫶🏻
