When Worlds Collide, Shadow Wrestles Light

Seventeen-year-old Cera Marlowe wants a normal life; one where she and her mom can stop skipping town every time a disturbing vision strikes. But when a girl she knows is murdered by a monster she can't explain, Cera's world turns upside down.

Suddenly thrown into an ancient supernatural battle, Cera discovers she's not alone in her gifting and vows to use her visions to save lives. But why does John Milton's poem Paradise Lost keep interrupting her thoughts?

In a race against time and a war against unearthly creatures, will decoding messages embedded in the works of classic literature be enough to stop the bloodshed and protect those she loves?

An action-packed young adult adventure-inspired by John Milton's Paradise Lost--yes, please.Just when my brain was turning to mush from too much Netflix. This book was the perfect balance of action, brilliant word building, and historic fact. Cera is the perfect tortured heroine with unique power and pedigree to plunge us into an invisible world only glimpsed through historic artists, monsters, and an army of gifted warriors. Her drive to vanquish evil pushes the plot along in a binge-worthy style that left my teen daughter and me hungry for the next one! I already loaned out my first copy and had to buy a second.

I absolutely could not put this book down and paid the price for it the next day in sleep derivation. #YOLO It was worth it. I love how caring and brave the main character is. I also love the artistic and beautiful way Sandra has with words. But most of all, I LOVE the premise and the world!! The entire book is a page turner! I immediately bought book two upon finishing this novel and am now waiting to read. Once I start, I know I'll tear through it and then the series will be over and I am going to be SO sad!

This book grabbed me right from the start. The plot is exciting with lots of action and suspense and the characters are engaging. The writing is exceptional with lines such as: "Through the blurry rain, the train hisses, holding its doors wide open", giving a visceral feel as if you are also part of the action. I love how the author also includes references to artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe and Milton and the importance that art plays in the unfolding of this story. Although the main characters are teen/young adult, this also appeals to an older audience as well (like me). This is a great read. I'm looking forward to the sequel!

I was originally drawn in by the premise of this book-- secret messages hidden in classical literature? Yes, please and thank you! I gobbled this book up as soon as it appeared on my Kindle and enjoyed it immensely! I love the urban fantasy feel of the story and the characters were (mostly) fabulous!

Cera was a likable protagonist, nothing I haven't seen before, though she got on my nerves a LOT with all the "I want to fight!" drama. Again we have the "special" fantasy character, but I didn't really mind that much (okay that's a lie I did, but whatever). I wish she would listen to people. I like heroines who listen more than fight. But anyway.

There was a pretty varied, pretty fun cast of characters, a few of whom might be considered stereotypical but all in all were intriguing to read about. The plot was really well executed, really grabs you from the start and doesn't let you go 'til the end! I'm looking forward to the sequel.

I was slightly disappointed that there wasn't actually much decoding messages in classical literature involved-- it was basically just Cera quoting Milton lines in her head. Um. Yay. The emphasis on art in this fantasy system was pretty cool though, but I don't get the "dying art" of poetry? Why is Cera so special and unique because she's a poet? Poets aren't exactly a dying breed?

Overall, a fun read. 3.5 stars. I'm excited to read the next in the series!

Even though this is written for the YA audience, and consequently, "mom" doesn't take center stage and save the day, the book was filled with so many thoughtful insights and appreciation for the arts, that I was happy to read every bit of this book. Overall, the creativity and intertwining of poetry and outright amazing descriptions made you feel like you were in the book watching from a side street - or after knowing the characters, wishing you really could be there to join in. I loved this book - and recommend it highly.

Check yourself, John Milton, because Sandra Fernandez Rhoads has got your secrets cornered at knife point! A Blade’s knife, to be exact. MORTAL SIGHT takes us on a hauntingly dark adventure through teenage Cera’s worst nightmares and most precious of unrealized dreams. With action scenes peppered by classical literature and art and then salted with relatable characters and young adult drama, this is a story every creative personality—or every person who’s ever craved a place to belong—can appreciate. If you like to peek into shadows to see what really lurks there and run heart first into the battle between good and evil to protect the ones you love, then go run with Cera’s crowd. Let Rhoads’ debut novel take you past the sights and sounds of coffee, guitars, poetry, and paintings into a twisty journey through shadow and light, first love, and that thing we all need: hope.

This book is a captivating page-turner! I connected with the main character Cera and her desire for community, and loved the rest of the characters and their development through the story as well! A great book for anyone who loves art, urban fantasy, and young adult novels! I can't wait to see what happens in the second book!
