Mortal Sight (Volume 1) (The Colliding Line) Hardcover – April 14, 2020
When Worlds Collide, Shadow Wrestles Light
Seventeen-year-old Cera Marlowe wants a normal life; one where she and her mom can stop skipping town every time a disturbing vision strikes. But when a girl she knows is murdered by a monster she can't explain, Cera's world turns upside down.
Suddenly thrown into an ancient supernatural battle, Cera discovers she's not alone in her gifting and vows to use her visions to save lives. But why does John Milton's poem Paradise Lost keep interrupting her thoughts?
In a race against time and a war against unearthly creatures, will decoding messages embedded in the works of classic literature be enough to stop the bloodshed and protect those she loves?

Cera was a likable protagonist, nothing I haven't seen before, though she got on my nerves a LOT with all the "I want to fight!" drama. Again we have the "special" fantasy character, but I didn't really mind that much (okay that's a lie I did, but whatever). I wish she would listen to people. I like heroines who listen more than fight. But anyway.
There was a pretty varied, pretty fun cast of characters, a few of whom might be considered stereotypical but all in all were intriguing to read about. The plot was really well executed, really grabs you from the start and doesn't let you go 'til the end! I'm looking forward to the sequel.
I was slightly disappointed that there wasn't actually much decoding messages in classical literature involved-- it was basically just Cera quoting Milton lines in her head. Um. Yay. The emphasis on art in this fantasy system was pretty cool though, but I don't get the "dying art" of poetry? Why is Cera so special and unique because she's a poet? Poets aren't exactly a dying breed?
Overall, a fun read. 3.5 stars. I'm excited to read the next in the series!
Just when my brain was turning to mush from too much Netflix. This book was the perfect balance of action, brilliant word building, and historic fact. Cera is the perfect tortured heroine with unique power and pedigree to plunge us into an invisible world only glimpsed through historic artists, monsters, and an army of gifted warriors. Her drive to vanquish evil pushes the plot along in a binge-worthy style that left my teen daughter and me hungry for the next one! I already loaned out my first copy and had to buy a second.
