The ninth novel of the bestselling Rivers of London urban fantasy series returns to the adventures of Peter Grant, detective and apprentice wizard, as he solves magical crimes in the city of London.

There is a world hidden underneath this great city.

The London Silver Vaults—for well over a century, the largest collection of silver for sale in the world. It has more locks than the Bank of England and more cameras than a paparazzi convention.

Not somewhere you can murder someone and vanish without a trace—only that’s what happened.

The disappearing act, the reports of a blinding flash of light, and memory loss amongst the witnesses all make this a case for Detective Constable Peter Grant and the Special Assessment Unit.

Alongside their boss DCI Thomas Nightingale, the SAU find themselves embroiled in a mystery that encompasses London’s tangled history, foreign lands and, most terrifying of all, the North!

And Peter must solve this case soon, because back home his partner Beverley is expecting twins any day now. But what he doesn’t know is that he’s about to encounter something—and somebody—that nobody ever expects…

Effortlessly original, endlessly inventive and hugely entertaining—step into the world of the much-loved, bestselling Rivers of London series.

Ben Aaronovitch was born in 1964. Discovering in his early twenties that he had precisely one talent, he took up screenwriting at which he was an overnight success. He wrote for Doctor Who, Casualty and the world’s cheapest ever SF soap opera Jupiter Moon. He then wrote for Virgin’s New Adventures until they pulped all his books.

Then Ben entered a dark time illuminated only by an episode of Dark Knight, a book for Big Finish and the highly acclaimed but not-very-well-paying Blake’s 7 Audio dramas.

Trapped in a cycle of disappointment and despair Ben was eventually forced to support his expensive book habit by working for Waterstones as a bookseller. Ironically it was while shelving the works of others that Ben finally saw the light. He would write his own books, he would let prose into his heart and rejoice in the word. Henceforth, subsisting on nothing more than instant coffee and Japanese takeaway, Ben embarked on the epic personal journey that was to lead to Rivers of London (or Midnight Riot as it is known in the Americas).

Ben Aaronovitch currently resides in London and says that he will leave when they pry his city from his cold dead fingers.

Overall, an excellent UF story by Ben Aaronovitch, plus stellar Audible version narration by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. I enjoyed the complex plot which reveals itself as the book proceeds. Men and women who own enchanted rings are being targeted, and several killed by an Angel-like being, who was accidentally released from an ancient container. I loved the subplot about the the Sons of Wayland, the wizardly smiths now headed by Grand Master Grace Yutani. Another, more poignant subplot features lonely ghosts still haunting the Darbyshire moors, long after their military planes crashed during WWII.

Happily, this UF novel features many magic practitioners and different types of wizardry—including mention of The Librarians, a New York group hunting dangerous magical artifacts. Not only does DC Peter Grant and DCI Thomas Nightingale have a powerful opponent in the Angel of the Burning Spear, but Lesley May—the cunning wizard turncoat and Peter’s former friend—is also after the enchanted rings.

New characters include DC Danni Wickford, who is being trained by Peter, to be a Falcon-capable officer. Newbie readers can follow Danni and learn about Peter’s weird world. I especially like Glossop—a new river spirit from Derbyshire in the East Midlands—one who manifests as a mischievous ten or eleven year-old girl. It’s also satisfying to read about secondary characters who are lovingly developed. Previously, it’s been DI Miriam Stephanopoulos, but this time, DCI Alexander Seawoll is featured.

I await the next entry in this series to learn more about the “Herald of the Dawn” and the harbinger of the new world.

These stories are an addictive blend of fantasy, history, and mystery. The characters are well defined and widely varied. My only complaint is he doesn't write fast enough. I have to wait too long for the next book.

This is a perfectly good late series entry. The plot resolution is anticlimactic, but enough interesting things “en mundo “ happen that series fans should give it the time

As Peter, nicknamed The Starling, begins training another Falcon agent, a situation involving a lamp and magical rings created during the Spanish Inquisition and an Angel armed with a spear powered by lightning glass who is bent on killing a group of people involved in a magical event during their college years require attention. Beverly's pregnancy and preparations for the birth of the twins require Peter's attention as well, and everyone wants to be there for the celebration. The continuation of this magical policing series is another entertaining drama.

I’ve read the Rivers of London series in the past two weeks . . . a delightfully headlong, pell-mell rush into the worldbuilding of Ben Aaronovitch. Fantastic characters, lovely history, and a very marvel of chosen family. I wish I knew Peter Grant. The safety he feels the need to create~we need more (any) of that in this plane of existence. I can’t remember the last time I read book nine of a series and planned to turn right back around and reread book one, but here we are. Gotta keep hanging out with the Nightingale.

This my 9th book will him, obviously, and just think it all started at a second hand book store in Texas on a chance pick. And I have enjoyed each and every book in this series and I can’t wait to continue the journey. Thank you very much

This has all of the trademark wit and whimsy of the previous Rivers of London books. Although there are some connections with previous storylines, it is a new departure and that is refreshing. The series clearly still has legs.

I came to be entertained and as usual I learned more about London and environs than I did as a PhD student in English literature. What a rollicking great adventure and British slang tutorial.
