I would label this as a "must read" because of how it reveals how our government operates from the "inside". If you wonder
why some strange things occur in Washington, this book informs you how they can happen. Most helpful to me was how
Harry McPherson, a liberal Democrat, reveals his soul together with his efforts to bring his convictions into reality. As a somewhat
more conservative thinker, I found it a sobering, almost chilling, lesson. For this reason I would highly recommend conservative
thinkers read this book. You'll get a true look into the mind of a liberal.........................Thanks Harry!

Absolutely the best book of political strategy, rules, hints and advice I have ever read. I learned of many of these the hard way in twenty-two years in politics and public policy work. Written by a master, working for an icon in American history, the book is a 'must read' for anyone involved in shaping American public policy at the local, state or national level.

This is an excellent look at how D.C. works from the inside. If you ever wanted to know why passing a bill isn't as simple as what you learned in high school govt., this is the best description of the human element in politics that I have ever read. The author vividly describes how the people and pressures in Washington create the practical (rather than ideal) government which leads the U.S. I would recommend this book to anyone with even the slightest interest in US politics. It is slightly dated (and thus a good history book for the 50's and 60's), but that doesn't hurt its value to the current reader.
