In June 1972, the 43-foot schooner Lucette was attacked by killer whales and sank in 60 seconds. What happened next is almost incredible. In an inflatable rubber raft, with a 9-foot fiberglass dinghy to tow it, Dougal Robertson and his family were miles from any shipping lanes. They had emergency rations for only three days and no maps, compass, or instruments of any kind. After their raft sank under them, they crammed themselves into their tiny dinghy.

For 37 days—using every technique of survival—they battled against 20-foot waves, marauding sharks, thirst, starvation, and exhaustion, adrift in the vast reaches of the Pacific before their ordeal was ended by a Japanese fishing boat. The Robertsons' strong determination shines through the pages of this extraordinary book which describes movingly their daily hopes and fears, crises and triumphs, tensions and heartbreaks.

Editorial Reviews

Review

...[a] well-written account....an unexpectedly personal view of a man's physical and a woman's emotional courage that, when bonded, produced the strength to survive. ― Sailing

For stark excitement, marine natural history, practical lessons, and human love and stresses, few records, if any, of hazard and survival have ever bettered it. ―
The Instrumentalist

[The Robertsons] survived and their tale is a triumph of human resource and determination against terrible odds. ―
Cruising World

What a brave man, what an eloquent writer! In case of shipwreck I would send for Dougal Robertson or, in absence of him, reread his book in order to find out what on earth to do next. -- Nicholas Monsarrat

About the Author

Dougal Robertson was born in Scotland in 1924 and spent the war in the Merchant Marine. He and his wife Lyn lived on a farm in England for a number of years before deciding to go on a circumnavigation with their children. He died in 1991.

Great story!

I couldn't put this book down. It is well written and I cannot believe what they had to go through.

This is quite an amazing story of how a family and one of their friends survives 37 days at sea. While heavy on sailing terms, I think it might be especially interesting for someone who is interested in learning about sailing. The author explains things well.

I ordered several first edition copies for my 7th grade language class. What an amazing story! Inspirational in so many ways, this book also invites many more interdisciplinary connections for use in the classroom. I plan to have lessons on geography, self-reliance, early human history and innovations, and more. Although the narrative is a bit dense and exact in its detail, this in turn creates a "life in the dinghy" perception around the reader. It is truly remarkable in so many ways. As this features a "man vs. nature" conflict theme, it also invites a good deal of observation about the stressors on the human psyche and influence of people's dispositions and personalities. Excellent!

This is a spectacular read. I had an old copy I loaned out and never saw again. When the urge came to read it again, I had to buy another copy. A really solid, detailed account of sea survival that also does a good job of dealing with the dynamics between the people on the raft. I actually re-read it before doing a longer sailing trip.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic tale of survival after shipwreck
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 18, 2023
An amazing story of six survivors - two quite small children - who survive for nearly 40 days in mid Pacific after their yacht is sunk by killer whales. An epic which anyone who sails or admires courage and determination should read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quelle aventure !
Reviewed in France on October 30, 2014

2.0 out of 5 stars Book is coming apart at the binding
Reviewed in Japan on February 25, 2013
I know there is some risk in buying a book used but I haven't even started reading it (just flipping through to look at photos) and the binding has cracked and the pages are falling apart. Sometimes better to pay a little more to buy a new book.
