Trigger (Devil's Reach Book 1) Kindle Edition
**This is a dark, violent, gritty book and may contain triggers for some. Intended for 18 + **
I was raised by the Devil himself.
Formed into a man that was unreachable.
I went from the boy with bruises
to the man with a trigger.
Killing is the only thing that calms the itch.
The demons inside were a constant battle.
…until she changed everything.
When you spend most of your time
in the dark, is it smart to step into the light?

About the author
J.L. Drake is a bestselling author with multiple series published in several countries. The Broken Trilogy is her bestseller, and her next series, Dark Water runs deep into the Broken and Blackstone world.
She was born and raised in Nova Scotia, Canada, and later moved to southern California. Though she loves the weather in Cali, she would sell her left kidney for a good rainstorm. Jodi’s love of the seasons back home in Canada definitely put an appearance in her books.
When she’s not writing, you can often find her sitting somewhere along the coast of Huntington Beach, reading, or at home curled up on a couch with her two children and husband, binge-watching Marvel movies.
“My name is J.L. Drake, and this is my story…” (Like how I did that there? You’re welcome, Broken fans).
I never set out to be an author. I hated English class and couldn’t write a paper to save my life. Being dyslexic was a hurdle, but I was always interested in storytelling. When I was younger, I did a lot of acting in theater, TV, and movies. Nothing major, but Nova Scotia was just starting to get into the movie business at that point. It brought me out of my shell and taught me to look at scenes from many different angles, which has proven to be a major asset to my writing."

In my experience there are 2 types of violent MC books. The kind that have violence in the background and heroes who mostly want to do good (maybe some crime is involved but there's also talk of "going legit"). This is usually done so the reader can root for them without feeling guilty that they would definitely be 'bad guys' in real life. The other type is what we have here, where the violence and crime is not just embraced but is a celebrated feature of MC life. I just was not quite prepared for it to be so... much. If you're a big fan of SOA, you'll probably be fine though.
After the 1st page I almost didn't read the rest. Our first introduction to main character "Trigger" is him in the middle of torturing an enemy. I mean real, I'm shivering to imagine it, torture. I was like um, am I even in the right head space for this?! Trigger is a Killer with a capital K. He's been doing it his whole life, he lives for it. Really. It took me awhile and lots of backstory to warm up to him. However his back story is intriguing and helps explain a lot about his reactions to things.
Tess was an interesting character, but her lack of backstory is frustrating. We are only given faint details about her ever present Past, but nothing that paints even a half-picture. She's clearly been through some trauma, but she's the tough as nails type. But there were things I just didn't get.
Tess evidently used to be a stripper bc she has serious skills on the pole. But it's written as though she has an addiction to it, and her best friend is all disappointed in her for stripping again, like it's falling off the wagon. Um what? Stripping is a legit job, she wasn't on stage shooting H so... I don't get that reaction and it's not explained.
She's repeatedly thrown in violent situations and while being scared, pretends to dismiss it with "I've seen worse". We're never told what "worse" is, so your mind is racing to imagine what that means. I mean someone gets shot in front of her during her 1st week of work, and it's business as usual.
***Spoiler Alert***
She gets threatened with rape and is rightfully scared, but basically sleeps it off. Then towards the end she gets attacked and threatened again and she's a total mess as if she has been raped. I was sure that was what happened with the way everyone was reacting, but actually it didn't happen. I mean yes she should be shook up, but I don't know, the reaction made me think something more had happened besides more threats.
Then there's that other torture scene where she fully embraces the dark side.. that was... dark. I'm all for the FMC embracing the MMC's world, I guess I just feel conflicted about the level of retaliation always seeming like overkill.
The fact that Tess refuses to tell Trigger about her Past when it's clearly still an issue, and that means it could find its way to Trigger's doorstep, is totally infuriating. She's told repeatedly that Trigger needs to know if her past will put his club in danger, and she ignores it. The fact that Trigger's right hand man Brick knows her past but refuses to tell, when again, it could come to their doorstep, doesn't seem believable. Supposedly she changed her number but someone from her past still got that number and has been calling/harassing her constantly. So obviously her past is not fully in the past yet. So obviously it's a current problem that Trigger needs to know about! In another review someone said that would NEVER fly in an MC and I think they're right about that.
My final gripe is the cliffhanger ending. They're annoying as hell, and the author KNOWS this bc its joked about in the story. At one point Tess gets upset about the book she's reading ending on a cliffhanger, to the point where I almost fooled myself into thinking Surely this book wouldn't do the same thing. But apparently there are 3 books so it happens twice!
Once I got accustomed to the level of violence, I was enjoying the read, but Tess's backstory being kept in the dark makes it hard to appreciate her character's decisions.
Trigger is rough, tough and so handsome, that he is so dark and sexy. He is the MC President for the Devil’s Reach MC. He wants what he wants and takes what he wants. He doesn’t let anyone get in his way. His idea of a relationship is wham, bam, thank you ma’am. He doesn’t do relationships- he just has sex and moves on to the next- that is Trigger’s idea of “relationship”. He does drugs like pot and he is a stone cold Killer- he could care less what people think of him. He does want Trigger wants, because he is Trigger and that honesty is surprisingly erotic which really took me by surprise and made me dig in deeper to the story.
The heroine of the story, Tess, finds herself caught up in the Devil’s Reach MC. Now this is one woman that is independent , sassy and not afraid to get her hands a little dirty. Tess has escaped a rough life with the help of her friends Brick, who is also in the MC and has brought her down to work as a bartender . When Tess meets Trigger, there is an instant attraction between these two. Trigger makes it known to Tess he doesn’t want a relationship yet his actions say different. Tess doesn’t let Trigger get away with treating her like trash and puts Trigger in his place. Trigger feels out of his league with this sassy woman and their relationship is so unique and different.
But all good things must come to an end or does it? When Trigger and Tess’s pasts catch up to them, does that mean they do not survive the outcome or will they come out stronger on the other side? The book ends on a cliffhanger and there will be a book two.
I loved this story and cannot wait to read book 2.
My Rating: 4.9 stars *****

STORY SO GOOD
Off to the next book ASAP.
Trigger is different from Drakes previous works that it's almost like you are in a whole new world.......but not quite, there are a few shadows in there you may have seen before. But you never know what's coming or who you will meet next. All of the characters are so real that you will feel like you really in the book.
(I will say that this is an 18 & up read-there may be triggers in there)
Drake went somewhere I never expected and I'm so glad she did. I think she really shows her range & story telling talent in this new series-(I've never been a big MC reader, I've now been pulled into the MC world.) Drake still stays true to who she is as a writer & storyteller. Now if you know Drakes work, then be ready for the twists and cliff hangers-we all know, love and love to hate her for. But if we didn't have those, lets be honest we wouldn't love to read all of Drake's series over, & over, & over again.
If her Broken, Blackstone & Darkness series are an example of why we love Drake so much then you know Trigger & the Devils Reach crew is gonna be pumped up by a thousand!
I would give Trigger 10 stars if I could, I read a ton of books every year, J.L.Drake is 1 of a very few Authors that I read every week if not every day, you just can't go wrong with any of Drake's work. So pick up Trigger or any of Drakes series, you can't go wrong!

Then I read this one. What a difference! Yes you still have the loyalty to the brothers, but this has so much more realism and I must say, gritty detail. I still don't know if it really reflects an MC's lifestyle truly, but the story is addictive.
I never read books that have cliffhangers, but this story sucks you in. You have to feel for Trigger, the President of the MC. He has had such a disturbed, evil upbringing and now lives in darkness, until Tess appears. Just as broken in her own way (we don't know how yet), she brings a single ray of light into his darkness.
The twists and turns in the story keep you anticipating, groaning and wanting to see a happily ever after, but...It ends and you have to buy good 2 and 3!
What an amazing story. This is more of a dark romance and it was shady, intense, twisted and oh so addicting.
Trigger is not just your moody hero. He is actually a sick, gritty, raw antihero. And I couldn't get enough of him. He was so intense and there was this dangerous, sexy vibe around him that I couldn't (and didn't want to) deny.
Tess is secretive, I have only guesses about her past, and I'm so intrigued. I also have a considerable crush on her. She is so strong, she doesn't back down, he holds her ground, but she is also smart enough to know her limits.
More often than not we see female characters posing as strong, but they are only being stupid. Not this time. Tess was strong enough to acknowledge her weaknesses and confident enough to know how much she could push her luck.
There were so many crazy things about them both, about their pasts, their demons, their fears and the ugliness the both hid. But there were also so many more things under the surface, and with a close and sensitive look, you could there were beautiful things, even if a little broken.
And they were so hot together. Their chemistry was off the charts, their feelings were undeniably growing, their loyalty was building up around them. It was beautiful to watch, even with all the gory things going on.
I'm addicted. And I can't wait to dive into the next book and figure out what the heck is going on.
Brilliantly written story by J.L Beck.
I believe the worst is yet to come and I'm about to delve into book 2!
