In this groundbreaking book, award-winning journalist and
New York Times bestselling author Leslie Kean investigates the unexplained continuity of the human psyche after death. Here, Kean explores the most compelling case studies of young children reporting verifiable details from past lives, contemporary mediums who seem to defy the boundaries of the brain and of the physical world, apparitions providing information about their lives on earth, and people who die and then come back to report journeys into another dimension.

Based on facts and scientific studies,
Surviving Death includes fascinating chapters by medical doctors, psychiatrists, and PhDs from four countries. As a seasoned reporter whose work transcends belief systems and ideology, Kean enriches the narrative by including her own unexpected, confounding experiences encountered while she probed the question concerning all of us: Do we survive death?

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Astounding! With her usual scientific precision and insatiable curiosity, Leslie Kean is our Orpheus, descending into the Netherworld to grapple with the most ancient of mysteries and return with inspiring evidence -- death shall have no dominion." —Ralph Blumenthal, investigative reporter, author of Miracle at Sing Sing

"With a keen eye and a no-nonsense approach, investigative journalist Leslie Kean explores what the actual data tells us about the question of survival past death. Examining many phenomena and case studies with penetrating depth and insight, Kean lets the evidence speak for itself. She takes us on an engaging, personal, and transformative journey that challenges the skeptic and informs us all."
—Harold E. Puthoff, Ph.D., Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies at Austin

"Surviving Death
is a thoughtful and at times startling exploration of the afterlife. As a skeptical journalist, Leslie Kean is uniquely equipped to examine and evaluate the evidence for survival of consciousness. After encountering a rash of impossible facts and startling personal experiences, her conclusion is unequivocal: We are woefully ignorant of what happens after death, but it is very likely that something interesting happens rather than nothing. A refreshingly careful and candid review." —Dean Radin, PhD, author of Supernormal and The Conscious Universe

"In addressing the most important question facing all of us, Kean has synthesized data from both a wide variety of credible sources and from her own exploration of seemingly unexplainable personal observations. After decades of research into this topic, I believe the preponderance of the evidence indicates that we survive death. But far more important is that I urge everyone to read
Surviving Death, engage in their own quest, and decide for themselves." —John B. Alexander, PhD, Colonel USA Ret., author of Future War and UFOs: Myths, Conspiracies, and Realities

"What a wonderful-and clarifying-opportunity to have someone with the reportorial skills and integrity of Leslie Kean explore the trouble-fraught subject of life after death. A quiet revolution is brewing today in the intellectual treatment of paranormal topics; Kean and this book are at the center of it."
—Mitch Horowitz, PEN Award-winning author of Occult America and One Simple Idea

Surviving Death says it all. You may change your mind about the hereafter.
I liked this books methodical approach to an esoteric topic and the HOPE it gives me at age 65 that something of my consciousness may survive the physical death of our brain. Our bodies are an incredibly complex system and subject to Newtons second law of thermal dynamics. Systems move from order to disorder because we are subject to empathy. I enjoyed the surprises in this book that took me without warning. There's a poignant love story about friendships surviving physical death. The revival of aspects of Spiritualism that I never investigated on my own was fascinating. Dr. Sam Parnia's recent comments added a depth of credibility for the hard-core skeptic. I finished the book stunned, hopeful and with a little more zest for every single day. Highly recommended,

I first discovered Leslie Kean while listening to a podcast about UFOs. I was so impressed by her that I purchased her book "UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go On the Record." Leslie is an outstanding journalist, one who has a sober, no-nonsense approach to subject matter that many consider to be on the fringe or not worthy of serious discussion.

I was very excited to read "Surviving Death" after once again hearing Ms. Kean discuss the book during an interview on a podcast that discusses paranormal subjects. Like her previous work, "Surviving Death" is well-researched and drawn from the types of sources that I trust the most (scientists, doctors, trained professionals of all stripes).

I have always essentially been an atheist/agnostic type, one who is somewhat skeptical of claims of reincarnation, near-death and out-of-body experiences (OBE), mediums and spiritualists, etc. However, the cases that Ms. Kean discusses in this book are so compelling that I was forced to seriously reconsider my rather hardened opinion of such matters, particularly the sections that presented anecdotal evidence for cases of reincarnation and people who had experienced an OBE during medical procedures (there are multiple stories that are exceptionally persuasive).

For me, far less interesting was the information provided about mediums. In fact, the last third of the book was a bit tedious for me, as I remain highly skeptical about physical mediumship, in general.

Surviving Death is accurate and well-written and based on science and critical thinking. I highly recommend this book and I look forward to all future work by Leslie Kean.

Leslie Kean has provided what may be the most comprehensive book investigating survival after death.
The book is a collection of chapters written by herself and various other writers on different related subjects.
I found Chapter 10 intriguing.
There is an explanation of what death and consciousness are. Another interesting nugget is the question of why some NDE experiencers don't recall vivid details while others do.
I rate the book 5 stars for the honest opinions and the volume of information from so many interesting sources.

Author Leslie Kean has a new book out entitled Surviving Death. It deals with the evidence that human beings have an afterlife……..after they die.
The book covers several aspects of afterlife evidence. From Near Death Experiences (NDEs) to reincarnation to odd manifestations (smells, unexplained noises or events) and even contacting deceased loved one's… Kean investigates several paths to this mystery.
One of the first stories which I read literally blew me away. It is about the past life of a young child who told his parents he was a WWII aviator. The amount of detail this young boy gave his parents on his past life is incredible. The story has made media headlines in the past……. Kean has included it in her book since it has been very well documented. There was also the story of another young child who claimed that in his prior life he was a Hollywood B actor in the 1930s. Once again the information this child gives his parents of that other life is absolutely fascinating. There is no way these kids could fabricate a story like this. There are just too many details involved. It will make you wonder!
The book also delves into Near Death Experiences or NDEs and also Outer Body Experiences OBEs. These accounts have become more common in our world today. One of the stories in the book is about a woman that had a cardiac arrest in Harborview hospital in Seattle in the late 70s. She told her nurse that she floated above her body and saw everything the doctors were doing. She also said she went outside of the hospital and saw a tennis shoe on a ledge which couldn’t be seen unless you were outside looking down. The patient’s story was verified by her doctors on what they were doing to her and so was the tennis shoe which they later found. How to account for that is the mystery. This is a fascinating book covering the many aspects of the possibility of an existence after death. The one area that Kean’s book may have lost me a bit was dealing with mediums, séances and people who can possibly communicate with the dead. Here my interest somewhat waned since I have never really looked into that avenue of thought.
Kean also brought into the book her personal experiences which are quite interesting. I will leave that for the reader to explore. Suffice to say that many of us have had similar types of experiences which we can’t just explain away as coincidence. Overall I enjoyed reading this book quite a bit.
Kean is known for delving into the unknown mysteries of our world. Her previous book was about UFOs/UAPs and garnered much attention for its thorough research and validity. She had many former military, government and civilian professionals come forward to discuss the phenomenon in that book. This new book she has treated in the same way. She brings together experts on the after death subject from around the world. This book looks to also break barriers on this age old mystery which we all have to confront someday.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well-written, well-researched book of considerable interest
Reviewed in Canada on June 26, 2018
This is a generally well-written, comprehensive book on a topic that is difficult to handle. The author, a skeptic—even for her own opinions—begins by discussing the difficulties, and the possible alternative explanations for the evidence that will be presented later in the book; and then the author launches into a menu of amazing evidence for the independent existence of consciousness—consciousness that does not depend on a functioning brain or body. In other words an entity that could well survive death. Cases involving remembered previous lives which are chosen precisely because the records of recall are detailed, and the circumstances are such that even telepathy and clairvoyance are very unlikely. Then there are cases involving Near Death and "Actual" (but reversible) Death, in which the patient's consciousness left the body and was able to see things that were not possible to see from the patient's vantage point, especially when both heart and brain had been flat-lined for surgical reasons, and hear things despite noise and anaesthesia, information that was subsequently verified. If this sounds like material you have read about before, think again. A number of outside experts contribute chapters, Other material is also provided in which deceased individuals (1) made contact ("After Death Communication—ADC) or (2) were contacted by psychic readers. In cases under (2) telepathy or clairvoyance cannot be ruled out. In cases under (1) expectation could be a factor, but in both types the evidence is certainly provocative, including a third party receiving a message for a deceased wife's husband communication transcribed as syllables which turned out to be in Russian, and was meaningful, though the third party did not speak Russian. Some ADCs involved recognisable smells delivered to more than one survivor at the same time in different places. Some of the author's personal experience of paranormal events during the ten year project are included. Then there are apparitions. An inexplicable account of one such apparition that could respond (an "Interactive Apparition") is extraordinary. There is plenty of other material, even some from the heyday of séances in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, taking care to avoid touching on the well known frauds that took place, except to acknowledge that there was fraud and stick to well authenticated material. I cannot précis the entire book. You'll have to read it. which I recommend you to do. Whatever your beliefs, you will find the material both interesting and challenging.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another absorbing read from Leslie Kean which may become the definitive investigative work on this most important subject
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 15, 2017
Following-up on her 2011 book ‘UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials go on the Record’, the independent NYC-based investigative journalist Leslie Kean here examines the evidence for our survival of physical death. As with her previous work, the primary target audience is less those already committed to any religious doctrine/faith or the new-ager steeped in the lore of this subject, but rather those who inhabit the everyday, ‘level-headed’ scientific mainstream and may be unacquainted with the evidence of the survival-after-death of human consciousness – which, as we discover in this book, is substantial.

In the Introduction, the author writes: “An investigation of such evidence has rarely been systematically consolidated and subjected to in-depth, rigorous scrutiny by a journalist…my intention is to present some of the most interesting evidence from diverse sources and show how it interconnects, making it accessible for the intelligent and curious reader encountering the material for the first time. Strict journalistic protocols can be applied to any topic for which there is data, no matter how unusual or even indeterminate”.

The book is very well planned and organized, and divides into four sections which each examine this subject from a different side of the prism:

1. Is there ‘Life’ before Birth? – examining some compelling cases of apparent reincarnation, where small children persistently report complex and precise details of a previous life later verified; two American cases form the bedrock of this section, chosen because the cultural and religious landscape in the US does not offer a natural framework for the parents of the children concerned to accept their children’s reports of their previous lives

2. To Death and Back Again – examining the best-documented stories of NDEs/OBEs

3. Communications from Nonlocal Minds – examining evidence for nonlocal consciousness and ‘mental mediumship’; this section contains some of the author’s most personal experiences of communications from departed family members and loved ones

4. The Impossible Made Real – examining instances of physical mediumship where the author takes part in experiments where full-form materialisations manifest in séance sessions; especially important here is the work of the British medium Stewart Alexander to whom the author made several research visits

As with Ms Kean’s ‘UFOs…’ book, several chapters are penned by other contributors like Jim Tucker MD, Pim van Lommel MD, Peter Fenwick MD, Julie Beischel PhD and others which endows the work with a more collegiate scientific dynamic and elevates the book beyond the purely personal – though for my money, the author’s reported personal experiences with different mediums are the most compelling and moving sections (those who know the work of the author’s close friend the late Budd Hopkins, and especially those who knew him personally, may be amused and delighted by the communications reported on pp156-167).

‘Surviving Death’ is a very high-quality piece of work with a logical structure founded on intelligent, evidence-based arguments. The writing from not only Ms Kean but from all subsidiary contributors is literate and straightforward with exemplary proofreading completely free of typos; there are two 8-page sections of (mainly colour) photographs of the people written about in the text and an accurate and comprehensive index. The white-themed hardcover and dust-jacket are also very striking and appropriate to the subject.

In summary, Ms Kean’s new book is an absorbing read containing nothing extraneous and concerned only with factual evidence which will likely become the definitive ‘serious’ work on this most important subject. Five stars.
