The characters are amazing! Beatriz’s arc is beautiful and well done. I especially love the romance that brews in this book, it reminded me a lot of the romance in The Selection, which is one of my favorites. Also, Laude is just plain amazing; she reminds me a lot of America’s maids in The Selection and the head maid, Myla, reminds me a lot of America’s head maid. There’s also Zichri, who is great; but is even better when we get to see him be real.
The pacing of this book is what made it nearly impossible for me to set the book down, I always wanted to know what was going to happen next and would lose all sense of time because of how enraptured I was with the book. I highly recommend reading this when you have no place to be in the next couple of days as pulling myself away from this book was torture.
The world is beautiful! I love how the plot goes through many different landscapes in the kingdom. The only place that I really wanted to see that we didn’t is Zichri’s home, but the places we did see made up for that.
I usually pick a favorite scene when I do a review, but with this one, I just can’t pick. I loved the story too much to say that one thing in particular was my favorite.
Definitely a book I’ll come back to again and again.
Note: I received a free advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Positives
Laude was my favorite character. She was fun, silly, loyal, and a great friend. I like that her relationship with the main character Beatriz helped Beatriz.
It was a fun adventure. I thought from the title that the book would be a romance, but Beatriz is focused on finding her gift and doing whatever it takes to go to the Valle de los Fantasmas to get that gift.
The message of not being selfish is important.
Negatives
I thought Beatriz's attitude was a bit tiresome. How she acted absolutely fits the story and is necessary to make a point, but I still wished she would quit being so uptight.
The message of the story was overshadowed by the romance. It felt like the story was building up to a powerful "aha moment" or full character arc, but in the end, the romance got the spotlight.
Overall: Super fun adventure!
"Those three words crushed my heart and wrung my insides into knots. Mama hugged me, but even her warmth didn’t ease my pain. Why wasn’t I special enough to get a touch of magic?"
In this moment, we get a glimpse of Princess Beatriz at age seven. By seventeen, where we begin our story, Princess Beatriz is a selfish, proud, and jaded young lady. The adventure that Candice Pedraza Yamnitz takes you on is a wild ride, as Beatriz must enter the Valle de los Fantasmas to receive her magical gifting. If she is successful, she believes she will finally find happiness through a betrothal to her friend and secret crush, Prince Lux.
I stayed up way too late to finish this epic Latin fantasy tale (always the sign of a GREAT book). The setting was unlike anything I had ever read before! My mind could picture royalty within a historic, Spanish inspired castle in the heart of the Giddel.
And then, their journey into Valle de los Fantasmas transported you into a jungle survival experience. Along the way, Beatriz is forced to face her preconceived prejudices as enemies become her friends as they help her on her quest. Spanish vocabulary intermingled within the text for an enjoyable and unique world-building experience!
The character arc of Beatriz is magical as she transforms from a haughty, prideful girl to a humble, caring, and wise young lady as she discovers her self-worth is not in her gifting, but in being at peace with who the Ancient One created her to be, and discovering the value of people who accept her as she is.
With adventure and surprises around every corner, I turned the pages in anticipation of Beatriz receiving all her heart desires. However, the Ancient One has a unique plan for her life. A plan that will save her heart, soul, and kingdom. I highly recommend this book for any and all fantasy fans!
The nitty gritty:
Romance: Clean. Just hand-holding and a few kisses.
Violence: PG13, as there is a war at the end. No gory details.
I received an ARC prior to publication, but the opinions are all my own.
I have already pre-ordered my copy, which will be released in February 2022!

I’m probably not the target audience for this book, so I know it’s something others who enjoy magical fantasy and super stubborn/independent heroines would like. :)
Beatriz is a relatable character with flaws in a story that sucks you & has you going on a journey with her.
I absolutely love the setting & seeing the latin flair woven through it which in my opinion gives this extra & wonderful layer to the world & characters.
