Grabs your attention and runs with it. If you love fantasy and history, this is the book for you. Great story telling.
On the good side, it keeps you guessing with some good twists and turns, the story always moves, with decent pacing, some early easter eggs can get reintroduced, which is always fun. You quickly get attached to the main chars. Easy font to read, always a plus.
Best parts: “night tourney”, and “river float”.. great imo.
Think, all the medieval lore of Dante’s Divine Comedy, and the epic tale of Paradise Lost, but told from the very relatable point of view of characters so real and likable, it feels like modern story about a ragtag family-by-circumstance trying to survive in a world growing ever more damned.
This book more than any other that I’ve read, truly brings you into the mindset of a 14th century medieval citizen, witnessing horrors (man made, natural, and supernatural) beyond comprehension. The human spirit is brought to its knees, decimated, and tortured, and still the quest must go on.
It’s horror with a purpose, and thanks to the love you develop for the characters, the horror becomes even more terrifying. I constantly had my hand to my mouth shocked at what happened next.
The ending of the book is spellbinding and like a cavalry charge— impossible to put down.
Somehow, this story rooted in very real cosmologies of medieval Christianity, when told by Christopher Buehlman, is far, far more compelling than your run of the mill high fantasy.
If you’ve any interest in accurate medieval fantasy, or any interest in biblical angel/demon supernatural stories, this is the book for you. An absolute must read!!!!!
I don't wanna give too much away, but though this was advertised to me as a horror novel, it also works very well as a sword and sorcery fantasy novel--it's not actually that different from a D&D plotline, in that a wandering swordsman with a good heart buried underneath his checked past/desire for revenge has to protect a young girl against giant demons, undead monsters, and other beasties as she travels the land searching for relics to stop the demonic plot and save the kingdom, assisted by a trusty cleric sidekick. However, Buehlman has really done his research, and despite the monsters you'll encounter, he treats medieval religion realistically (lots of corrupt clergymen) but also sympathetically ("true" faith is portrayed as a force for good and hope). The descriptions of the arms and armor, medieval life, and the big battles of the Hundred Years War like Crecy (given the novel's timeframe) are also very historically accurate and compellingly written. The combat scenes are nice and the characters are great, you'll come to love Thomas and Delphine and you wo't be able to keep yourself from grinning as Thomas grows attached to his young ward despite himself over the course of the story. And again, no spoilers, but the ending was one of the best I've read in a while, nearly brought me to tears. Absolute 5/5, I'm gonna get the rest of Buehlman's books to show my support for this author :D

Una joya literaria para fanáticos de la fantasía medieval oscura, es una especie de fear and hunger, dark souls, bloodborne y cualquier otro título que no tenga piedad con sus protagonistas.
