Jim True knows. He has returned from an out-of-body experience to find he has been brutally murdered and his body mutilated. No one can see him, no one can hear him, no one, except his killer, knows he still exists. Freed from his body, True embarks on a quest to find his killer and discover why and how he has managed to survive.

As he closes in on his murderer, True discovers that even the very people he loved and trusted have betrayed him. He meets his killer, a strange and sinister figure who can also leave his body at will.

An epic and deadly battle ensues between True and a seemingly unstoppable and hideous serial killer—a man now intent on even more murders, including True’s wife and child...

One of the most popular books about horror would be Stephen King's Danse Macabre. Over the years, I've read it a couple of times and have been inspired by it to try out some authors. One of those writers was James Herbert, and now I've read a dozen or so of his books. Nobody True is one of his most recent, and like most Herbert novels, it's a pleasure to read.

Typically when you read a book narrated in the first person, you have a reasonable assurance that, whatever else happens, the narrator will survive. Not so here: from the get-go, James True is dead, a ghost relating the story of his life and after-life. Actually, "ghost" might not be the right word: at the time of his murder, True was having an out-of-body experience, something he'd done on several occasions in the past. The only difference this time is that he had no living body to return to.

True doesn't even know who killed him. The obvious suspect - according to the police - is a serial killer, a malevolent person who may have the ability to sense True's presence. True has his own suspicion: his business partner Oliver, who he'd had a major argument with just prior to his death. Some invisible snooping will do nothing to lessen True's suspicions. Yet even if this is the case, what can he do? True is invisible and silent to the living (except, maybe, the serial killer); he is even having trouble learning the rules of his new existence.

Nobody True may not have the most original story (even True at one point notes a similarity in his plight to the one in the movie Ghost), but Herbert is an accomplished enough writer to bring new life to the idea. As a novel of supernatural suspense, this works well, with a likable main character, a horrific villain and some nice plotting.

I read this book many years ago before the invention of e-books but could not remember the name. After extensive searching on the internet I finally found and enjoyed reading more the second time than I did the first. A lot of the Obe explanations are universally taught and correct. I would personally love to master this skill.

This is one of Herbert's most memorable books and probably in my top 5 of his stories.Creepy stuff in places but a gripping piece of fiction with an interesting subject matter. Highly recommended.

Witty writing style, an unforgettable horror tale with some twists I did not expect. One of the best books I’ve read in years.

The concept was a good one. At times it was quite the page turner but over all, I have to say I liked it but did not love it. It did make me think, however, which is never a bad thing.

This story I borrowed from the library as an audio and I listened
to this mystery with HORROR stamped all over it.

After I had returned it I kept telling friends about the plot.
It was SO different Out of Body Experiences being one of the main parts of the plot. Months later i was still raving about this story.

I have just read all of the reviews and some of them really describe the story very well so I won't repeat the plot here. Yes Frank Herbert does go on a little too long in one place only about OBE but the overall plot is SO MIND BLOWINGLY different it is in my 10 top stories
that I will never forget.

I would like to give this story a 4 and 1/2 star rating but after seeing some of the reviews I have to give this a 5 star. (I rarely give a 5 star). If you are not into scary horror don't buy this book and then give it a bad rating. It is mystery horror and well done.

The twists and at times (very sick) turns makes this a MUST read.

I have now gone to Audible and bought this story and downloaded it
to keep forever. You will never think about OBE again without thinking of this story!!!!! Highly recommended!!!

Good book, fun to read. Nothing really new here, but the author makes the most of his material. His characters are believable and the story plot flows.

3.0 out of 5 stars これはホラーかな。それとも家族愛物語?
Reviewed in Japan on February 19, 2007

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely one of his best

I haven't read a James Herbert novel for quite a few years, having moved away from the genre that books like "The Rats", "The Fog" and "The Dark" fall into.
Thankfully, like myself, Herbert has moved on but has not lost his potency to construct and tell a wonderful story. The characters are quickly established but with enough details so that the reader knows exactly how they all interact within the story. The malelovelence and evil of Moker, one of the key characters, is eery and the way in which Herbert has made James "Jimmy" True narrator of the story is very cleverly written.
There is more than one twist to the story that, I guarantee, will surprise you. There is more than enough suspense and, as the story unfolds, there are so many questions that you just HAVE to know the answer to that you'll be turning the pages well into the small hours of the morning.
One of the most enjoyable aspects for me, personally, was Herbert's portrayal (or belief?) of the question that everyone asks - what does the afterlife hold for us? I found myself almost hoping that, unwittingly, Herbert has almost stumbled upon the answer.
An excellent read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slow at first, before a twisty rollercoaster ride.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 26, 2022
James Herbert took his time setting the stage and establishing the characters, but it’s well worth sticking with. In contrast, the second half of the novel is a rollercoaster ride. Some might find certain elements of the story genuinely upsetting, or perhaps even offensive. It is a horror novel after all (the clue is in the word, ‘horror’), so not for the lily livered. I gave this five stars because I found it genuinely compelling, and enjoyed Herbert’s plain English writing style.

Nobody True is a wonderful story about a man who loved his life, his wife, his daughter and his job. Unfortunately he is soon wrong about every thing. As the story continues there are many remarkable occurrencies,. some good most bad. James Herbert was one of the best horror writers I've ever had the pleasure to read. If you've never read this story, read it now. If you have read it read it again there will be parts you didn't fully understand the first time. Good reading
