Behind Blue Eyes tells the story of Nephilim, a warrior for the Guardian Angels of Olympias, a military outfit responsible for protecting the city against those who aim to do it harm, including rivals to the Olympias Conglomerate, the corporation overseeing the city. As she faces the prospect of a promotion, Nephilim becomes confused by doubts surfacing in her head that perhaps the cause she fights for isn't entirely just. As these doubts take hold, her journey sets her on a collision course with the Guardian Angel's leader, High Archangel Metatron.
The author tells a story with an in-depth plot and plenty of twists and turns. It unfolds at a steady pace, but always builds momentum as it moves forward. The story unfolds at a natural pace while giving it room to breathe as it builds its world, delves into its characters, and explores themes about corporate greed, what it means to be human, and breaking one's programming.
This is the first part of a series; however, while by the end of the book, it is clear there is more story to be told, it feels like a complete, satisfying story.
The prose is easily digestible, resulting in a book that reads quicker than its page count would suggest. It navigates the reader through the story, explaining everything they need to know without pandering to them. The world is vividly realised, as are the characters. The slower-paced parts of the book never drag and always keep the reader engaged, and the action sequences are visceral, putting readers into the moment. The author has struck a wonderful balance between detail and pacing, ensuring that is flows well, keeps moving forward, and most importantly, entertains.
As the protagonist and point of view character, Nephilim is the most clearly realised character. This is fitting, as Behind Blue Eyes is firmly the character's journey. Through her eyes, we see the world and how it operates. The title is beautifully fitting as it is about this character beyond her glowing blue eyes—and one’s eyes are the window to the soul, after all. Her journey from simple warrior to somebody wanting to fight for a better future, from someone cut off from humanity to learning what love is, is at the book’s core.
The supporting characters are also great. Whether they be friend or foe, each of them is memorable, both filling the role required by the story and enriching its world. All the characters' voices are unique and distinct. The dialogue ensures they all sound like individual people and feels natural, whether the character is a cyborg cut off from humanity, or fully human with a firm grip on their humanity.
If you're a cyberpunk fan, you'll find so much to love here. The author has painted a fully realised world with some great action and a gripping plot with plenty of twists and turns. If you’re unfamiliar with the genre, this is a great place to start, thanks to a wonderful, personal story about Nephilim and some great adventure.
But one of the Angels, Niphilium, has doubts about the perfection of the society under her protection. And when an accident releases her mind from the ever-watching eyes of her superiors she starts to see that her society is not as perfect as she had been led to believe.
Overall, I dug this book. It’s fun, highly stylized with a nice pace, and an ever-evolving story that keeps the reader guessing. It’s the kind of book that lets one sit back and let the Movie of the Mind take over.
The one thing that I didn’t like about it was the fact that it seems to want to touch on just about every cyberpunk theme at once. Oppressive corporate rule, the surveillance state, a society of forced compliance, and so on and so on. It packs in a lot of ideas but, in the end, doesn’t really settle on any of them. The result is a main character who, though undeniably badass, doesn’t have much agency. She sort of swept along the events with this vague idea of bringing down the system with no real idea how or even why.
I shouldn’t say that no theme or idea emerges. There is one idea that carries throughout the story. And that’s the idea that an authoritarian state runs into trouble against something as simple as romantic love. The state needs absolute loyalty from all people, something that is unlikely to happen when a romantic partner is involved. In essence, love conquers all… even an oppressive all-seeing government hive-mind.
Well, sorta… you’ll have to read the book.
Again, I dug it. Lots of action, bad-ass killer cyborgs a little sex and romance. Doesn’t quite get a good clean hit at social commentary which is something I tend to like in this genre but still fun.
Some other reviewers have noted some formatting problems, and some have said that it could use better editing. While both of those are true, please don't let that keep you from enjoying this book. It was very easy to overlook the few formatting or editing issues I noticed.

The concept of post-apocalyptic world governed by Mega-Corporations.
Philosophic questions, moral delma romance and freedom.
I like the story and am ready to see what’s happening behind the blue eyes next.
The protagonist is a cold-blooded killer cyborg called Nephilim, and much of the story takes place through her (blue) eyes. And what a ride it is. It went in directions I didn't see coming, packed with twists and turns right up to the ending. The prose is fast paced and so easy to read, never once did I find myself stuck in a rut, or wanting to skip sections.
If you love cyberpunk, then this book is an absolute necessity. There's corporate warfare, the aforementioned killer cyborgs, action scenes that will blow your mind, and the high tech, low life, dystopian future we all love.
As I was reading this book, I was totally swept away by the intricate world building, the brutal yet relatable characters, and the outstanding combat passages.
What I'm most pleased about however is that this is just the beginning of the series. I can't wait to continue with the rest of the books. As for the rating it's a perfect score.
Behind Blue Eyes follows Nephilim in a society believed to be perfect; any and all things miserable, or even simply inconvenient have been taken out of the picture. Anyone who disagrees with this way of life is hunted down and slaughtered by cyborgs like Nephilim. Since creation it’s all she’s known, and all she believes to be right, until she suffers a system glitch. Being off the grid and having a taste of freedom leads her to wonder what is truly right, and who she should really be fighting for.
Anna Mocikat had me obsessed with Shadow City, but this? This was a science fiction masterpiece. This was everything you could want in a futuristic dystopia run by battle-purposed cyborgs, mistrusting humans, and the dangerous potential of artificial intelligence developing flaws in the system. Gruesome battle scenes, forbidden love, and near-impossible odds all made this book extremely difficult to put down.
If you are a fan of George Orwell, this is the read for you. Behind Blue Eyes was like a futuristic sequel to 1984, and felt like a huge salute to it. From references to direct quotes, and constant surveillance to an advanced form of the thought police, it screams Orwell. It is a dystopia disguised as a utopia to its very core.
This story is fast paced, suspenseful, and keeps you on your toes. Plot twists catch you off guard, relationships pull at your heartstrings and every big reveal is like a giant epiphany that has you falling out of your chair. Or sofa. Or bed. Whatever it is you’re usually on when you read, you get my point.
I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this book. I have nothing to critique. It was perfectly done, and I can’t wait to read more. As I’ve said before, and will continue to say, I will most definitely be reading more from Anna Mocikat.

Excellent characters, nasty and resilient (curse his soul!) antagonist, heart-pounding love interest, nail-biting action.
Pick up the boxed set. Wished I had. Will rectify situation immediately.
