Judd Winick (born February 12, 1970) is an American comic book, comic strip and television writer/artist and former reality television personality. Winick first gained fame for his 1994 stint on MTV's The Real World: San Francisco, before earning success for his work on comic books as Green Lantern, Green Arrow, and Pedro and Me, his autobiographical graphic novel about his friendship with Real World castmate and AIDS educator Pedro Zamora. He created the animated TV series The Life and Times of Juniper Lee, which ran for three seasons on Cartoon Network.

I watched The Real World SF with a friend of mine, solely because we’re from SF & wanted to see what it used to be like.

We immediately fell in love with Pedro. He was so well spoken, brave, strong, & made a huge impact on us. It’s heartbreaking that he was only 22 when he passed but through Judd, Pedro is able to live on & continue impacting newer generations.

Wasn't sure about a comic book novel but found myself drawn in with the same richness of reading a traditional written format. Watched TRW3 so knew the central characters. So many years later it is still sad but uplifting to think about what 1 brave 22 year old gay man achieved by just being his best self and allowing the world to watch.

For those of us who lived through losing friends and acquaintances during the 80s and 90s, this book was one of the few acknowledgments about what it felt like to be in that place. Grateful to Mr. Winick for writing and drawing the truth of that time.

I was concerned when I realized that Pedro and Me was in comic book format. However, it took me only minutes until I found myself lost in the story and repeatedly teary-eyed. Though funny at times, this was no comic. To me, it was primarily a love story between two friends that lasted until death and beyond. It is not often that we get to observe, much less experience, this type of committed brotherly love. I found it very moving, and it still haunts me. I was an ardent watcher of Real World San Francisco, however, so I can't know what reading the book would be like for those who didn't "live" with Pedro and Judd for 6 months.

This is a truly beautiful book. I have had a copy for years and got this as a gift for a friend. The illustration is really clear, as is the narrative. It will make you cry. I'm not as keen on the new cover but that is a minor detail. It's based on an early US reality TV show - I've never seen it but it makes no difference. It's about a straight cartoonist who has to share a room with a gay guy with AIDS, but it's so much more subtle and complex - and beautiful than that. If I could only keep one graphic book, this would be it

I never saw the real world but the story of Pedro is charming that had me choked up as the story progressed- a very rare thing for the comics medium to evoke of me. This was recommended to me in a comics theory course I took as an rare example of how gay culture can be fairly represented in the comics medium.

In part this story is about effect of AIDS but that is more of an externality imposed onto Pedro it is more about how Pedro was so much more than his sexual orientation.
