This noir fantasy thriller from a debut author introduces the gritty town of Titanshade, where danger lurks around every corner.

"Take a little Mickey Spillane, some Dashiell Hammet, a bit of Raymond Chandler, and mix it with Phillip K. Dick's Blade Runner; add a taste of CJ Box, and Craig Johnson, and you've got a masterpiece of a first novel." —W. Michael Gear, New York Times bestselling author

Carter's a homicide cop in Titanshade, an oil boomtown where 8-tracks are state of the art, disco rules the radio, and all the best sorcerers wear designer labels. It's also a metropolis teetering on the edge of disaster. As its oil reserves run dry, the city's future hangs on a possible investment from the reclusive amphibians known as Squibs.

But now negotiations have been derailed by the horrific murder of a Squib diplomat. The pressure's never been higher to make a quick arrest, even as Carter's investigation leads him into conflict with the city's elite. Undermined by corrupt coworkers and falsified evidence, and with a suspect list that includes power-hungry politicians, oil magnates, and mad scientists, Carter must find the killer before the investigation turns into a witch-hunt and those closest to him pay the ultimate price on the filthy streets of Titanshade.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Take a little Mickey Spillane, some Dashiell Hammett, a bit of Raymond Chandler, and mix it with Phillip K. Dick's Blade Runner; add a taste of C. J. Box, and Craig Johnson, and you've got a masterpiece of a first novel. I hate to call any novel a work of genius, but Stout's Titanshade taps all the right keys."
—W. Michael Gear, New York Times bestselling author

"Debut author Stout combines a pitch-perfect noir tone and a richly detailed world full of human, amphibian, and less-identifiable characters in this instantly gripping fantastical mystery.... Stout handles this complex mystery with ease, invoking the best elements of classic noir mysteries, while fearlessly making this world, with its retro style and multilayered mythology, all his own."
Publishers Weekly

"
Titanshade is entirely unique: it’s a gritty noir murder mystery on an alien world with multiple species, a strange form of sorcery, a powerful religion, and large-scale political intrigue. And it’s set in the 1970s, with pay phones, 8-track tapes, racial tensions, and arguments about disco music. What’s amazing is how good it is at being all of these: the genuinely compelling mystery lives in a hugely original sf world and an immersive historical milieu."
ALA Booklist

"Dan Stout’s debut novel is flawless.
Titanshade is set in an original, gritty fantasy world, like enough to ours to take you by the throat as the detective noir plot roars along, yet filled with intriguing other beings and moments of remarkable magic. Highly recommended."
—Julie E. Czerneda, author of The Gossamer Mage

"If you like rollicking detective stories with some action-adventure and alien culture to overlay the mystery, you should give this one a look. I can almost guarantee it won't be what you expect."
—SFRevu

"All in all, the book grows on the reader, slowly at first, but then with the speed of a rabid kudzu vine egged on by supervillainess Poison Ivy. By the end of the book
Titanshade satisfies well enough to make you start over at the beginning to see what you missed."
New York Journal of Books

"
Titanshade was a wonderful blend of magical realism, police procedural, and thriller."
—Genre Minx

"This is a solid debut, giving us a fascinating new world, some fun characters who feel real, and a story which, I guarantee will keep you turning pages into the wee hours."
—Sci-Fi and Fantasy Reviews

Squibs and other humanoid amphibians and actual humans make up the varied and distinct population of the rich and corrupt oil-driven city of Titanshade in this superbly entertaining noir fantasy novel.
The setting and the murder mystery hooked me from the start but what I loved most about this novel is its very human protagonist, detective Carter, who has taken it upon himself to solve the horrific killing of a rich and powerful squib. Carter’s desire to solve the crime is driven by his commitment to his profession and town as well as by a moral obligation to the troubled teenage girl whose deceased mother was near and dear to him. Carter’s voice is street smart and engaging and the author deftly alternates action and thought so that we’re always in Carter’s head, heart, and soul no matter if he’s firing his gun or feeding his cat or recalling the woman he loved.
There’s magic in Titanshade both figuratively and literally as fantastic substances fall from the sky and people transform into other beings at will and the smell of squib blood has mood-altering properties.
This is a novel that screams to be on the big screen, its beautifully conjured world much too rich and nuanced for a book.
If you’re looking for action-packed noir fantasy thriller that feels like a dream and at once surprisingly real, look no further, this is it!

Dan Stout has created a fascinating world that is clearly not Earth. There are eight intelligent species, including humans, which for the most part get along well with each other. When an ambassador from the Squibs, a frog-like species, is found murdered and gruesomely dismembered, Carter, a disgraced cop, is called upon to solve the mystery. Once the action begins, practically every chapter ends in a cliffhanger. There is no sex, but there is lots of violence, some of which is described in graphic and grisly terms (which is why I gave the book 4 stars and not 5; proceed with caution if you like to read while you're eating!) The elements of science fiction and fantasy fit well with the story, making this a unique read.

This is a great start to what is apparently already a trilogy. A cross between police procedural, fantasy and urban magic genres, it easily stands as any of these alone. Excellent character and world building. Looking forward to the next novel.

This was just a fun read. Hammett in space. Lots of great one liners and interesting mystery. I’ll check out book 2.

This gritty detective story is placed in a strange, half recognized land where some sort of magic exists, but the magic is only mentioned casually. There are some other races, but again mentioned casually. It makes for an intriguing novel where you keep being curious what is going to be revealed next.
Warning: the violence is perhaps too well described.

A wild, thrilling and creative ride. Just when you think Stout has exhausted his bag of tricks, he hits you with a change-up. Excellent world building and fun characters. Can’t wait to read more in the series.

Gritty, noir, a jaded cop and a unique world combo of who is the 'them' against 'us'.

They say you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover but I just couldn’t not. That cover tells you that you’re going to have fun. That you are going to read about amazing things, fantastical things that will stay with you long after you finished this book.

So give it a chance if you love epic tales full of great characters and wonders and magic and life.

I want to have the second book. NOW

Initially I was attracted to the cover and the blurb. But after starting to read, I felt the pull of the author's writing. It sucked me right in and I couldn't stop. Whenever I thought, that's it, case solved, something new and plausible came up. At no point did the story get boring. If anything the story got more intense by the page.
