John Winn Miller's THE HUNT FOR THE PEGGY C, a semifinalist in the Clive Cussler Adventure Writers Competition, captures the breathless suspense of early World War II in the North Atlantic. Captain Jake Rogers, experienced in running his tramp steamer through U-boat-infested waters to transport vital supplies and contraband to the highest bidder, takes on his most dangerous cargo yet after witnessing the oppression of Jews in Amsterdam: a Jewish family fleeing Nazi persecution.

The normally aloof Rogers finds himself drawn in by the family's warmth and faith, but he can't afford to let his guard down when
Oberleutnant Viktor Brauer, a brutal U-boat captain, sets his sights on the Peggy C., Rogers finds himself pushed to the limits of his ingenuity as he evades Brauer's relentless stalking, faces a mutiny among his own crew, and grapples with his newfound feelings for Miriam, the young Jewish woman whom, along with her family, he must transport to safety.

When Rogers is seriously wounded, Miriam must prove she is as tough as her rhetoric to save everyone as the U-boat closes in for the kill. THE HUNT FOR THE PEGGY C is a masterpiece laced with nail-biting tension and unexpectedly heartwarming moments that any reader, not just fans of naval fiction, will enjoy.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“I highly recommend The Hunt for the Peggy C, even for those who would not normally read naval fiction. Cover to cover, the book will keep you in a perpetual state of suspense. There is no time to guess what will happen next―you’ll be too busy biting your nails and crossing your fingers.”
―Military Writers Society of America (Sue Rushford)

“Miller’s storytelling brilliance is especially evident in his ability to sustain intrigue, ensuring readers eagerly anticipate every subsequent chapter. This gripping novel is a must-read for those drawn to historical narratives and those who revel in the thrill of fast-paced, action-filled tales. So dive into The Hunt for The Peggy C and be prepared for an enthralling literary voyage that explores uncharted territories of the human spirit during war. Five stars!”
―Literary Titan

"The tumult of World War II is an endless source of inspiration for crime fiction and historical authors, but it takes a lot of dedication to craft a story that not only feels true to the era but gets readers to engage with the characters and the things they represent. That’s where the effort has been focused in The Hunt for the Peggy C, a maritime thriller and debut novel for John Winn Miller. Miller is no stranger to writing. He’s a veteran journalist who has worked in the US and Europe. He’s also written scripts and been involved in four film productions. All of that experience has gone into The Hunt for Peggy C, and then some...It’s got battle action, suspense, brutality, and a love story. Are you ready? Sound the foghorn…"
―Crime Fiction Lover, by Co-founder Garrick Webster, Touting the Peggy C on His Rap Sheet Along with Cormac McCarthy’s Latest

“EDITOR’S PICK: This superior maritime thriller finds an American captain smuggling Jewish refugees as Nazi prowl. Great for fans of: Nicholas Monsarrat’s The Cruel Sea and Alistair MacLean’s HMS Ulysses.”
BookLife (Publishers Weekly Offshoot)

“In this World War II novel, an American captain of a cargo ship gets paid to smuggle a Jewish family to safety and ends up doggedly pursued by Nazis… It is a dangerous mission given that the ‘heartless sea’ is swarmed by ‘trigger-happy U-boat captains,” a perilous situation thrillingly portrayed by author Miller… The action―and there is no shortage of it―is electrifying. Further, the author’s knowledge of the relevant historical material―in particular, the naval aspects―is extraordinary... A captivating, action-packed thriller that’s historically astute.”
―Kirkus Reviews

“The settings are immersive. The interactions between members of Rogers’s crew are rich and entertaining… Captain Rogers evolves as a leader … Miriam is a vibrant secondary character… The novel’s suspense increases thanks to the simmering threat of mutiny. Moving through unpredictable, dramatic twists, its tension is resolved via gripping action scenes and moments of sacrifice, helping to make The Hunt for Peggy C a riveting historical thriller about the risk that a steamer captain takes at sea for the sake of duty and love.”
―Foreword (Clarion) Reviews

“John Winn Miller is a writer I appreciate: longtime journalist (like me), and now a novelist with great attention to detail (also like me). We even share a publisher (Bancroft Press, which initiated my movie review book, VIOLENT SCREEN). Based on his maiden novelistic voyage with The Hunt for the Peggy C, I see smooth sailing ahead for John in his new career.”
― Stephen Hunter, NYT Bestselling Author of Game of Snipers: A Bob Lee Swagger Novel, and Pulitzer Prize Winner for (Film) Criticism

"All-round, a fantastic story that is highly recommended to all adults, young and old. FIVE STARS". -- READERS' FAVORITE

"The Hunt for the Peggy C is a vivid inspection of moral, ethical, social, and political changes set against a thrilling backdrop of confrontation and revelation that will reach not only historical novel readers, but those typically attracted to thriller and action stories. Library collections on the lookout for vivid World War II accounts and lively plots will find The Hunt for the Peggy C a winning attraction." Midwest Book Review

"Miller’s scenes are so vivid readers will wonder if they are reading a novel or watching a movie."―Independent Book Review

“A rare book indeed! A very well-researched and informative tale about an often overlooked place and period in history, yet the story never gets lost in the details. Instead, this is a tense, fast-moving, and stirring account of men called upon to overcome about the most daunting situations imaginable.”
―Don Keith, Author, Warshot, Only the Brave, and numerous other works of WWII History

“Pack your seabag and prepare for adventure! This exciting tale is a page-turner from its opening line and will leave the reader breathless with all the action. This is a must read for historical naval fiction lovers!"
―Matt Zullo, Retired U.S. Navy Master Chief Petty Officer and author, "The U.S. Navy's On-The-Roof Gang" Series

THE HUNT FOR THE PEGGY C is an extraordinarily good read. In fact, it’s not just the best book I’ve read in two to three years, but is reminiscent of THE NIGHTINGALE. The PEGGY C story is intriguing and clever. The author's in-depth research is much in evidence, with many facts scattered throughout, which are interesting and lend authenticity. This is an outstanding work by Mr. Miller and I anxiously await a sequel.”
―N. Thomas Rice, reviewing on Booksirens.com

"The Hunt for the Peggy C shows us the Battle of the Atlantic from an unusual perspective, that of the ordinary sailors who faced death from the guns and torpedoes of Hitler's U-boats. Miller takes us on an adventure from the Channel to the Eastern Mediterranean, as an obsessed U-boat commander pursues the equally obsessed captain of a tramp steamer. It's a story Bogart and Bacall would have been proud to star in."
―Dr. Robert Farley, Author of The Battleship Book

"Kudos to John Miller for this riveting and suspenseful tale. I was on the edge of my seat reading it! Impeccably researched, this intense sea chase has at its heart a wonderful love story that will keep you glued to your chair until the very end! I could not put it down until I found out how it was resolved. I highly recommend this book!”
―Robin Hutton, Author, The NY Times Bestseller, SGT Reckless: America's War Horse

The Hunt for the Peggy C is a tour de force of historical research that has pace, clarity, suspense, fascinating historical data woven in with the narrative, and perhaps most importantly, heart.”
―Chris Evans, former Random House Editor and Author of A Darkness Forged in Fire and Of Bone and Thunder

The Hunt for the Peggy C delivers action, excitement, and romance from the very first page! Amazing in-depth research buttresses this exciting tale of believable people facing unbelievable odds. Occurring during a period of history that few know about, the story both thrills AND educates! Recommended―this is a good one!

This one is a historical heart racer as a steamer, the PEGGY C, is pursued by a German U-boat because the cargo the PEGGY C is carrying includes the human kind. The book is set during WWII and the PEGGY C with its captain, Jake Rogers will take on any type of cargo that will give a paycheck. In Amsterdam, the PEGGY C gets cargo that is supposed to go to Gibraltar. When the PEGGY C is stopped by a U-boat, it’s revealed that the cargo includes 5 Jewish family members seeking escape. This book has history, action, drama, and even romance. I learned about U-boats, ships and the dynamics of crews. The book felt like it easily could have been based on a true event and kept me fully engaged. Not only does the U-boat pursuing the PEGGY C have a very determined Captain at its helm trying to take down the boat, but there are also pirates, German prisoners, and even a potential mutiny that stand in the PEGGY C’s way of delivering its cargo. One of the human cargo is Miriam who before the war was studying to be a doctor. She and Captain Jake strike up a romance which adds an interesting layer to the book.A great book that takes you back in history while also providing lots of high seas action.I received this book as a gift. All opinions are my own.

This is a captivating blend of historical suspense and heartwarming moments. Set against the backdrop of early World War II in the North Atlantic, Captain Jake Rogers embarks on a perilous journey, transporting a Jewish family fleeing Nazi persecution. The narrative skillfully weaves breathless suspense as Rogers navigates U-boat-infested waters, facing the relentless pursuit of Oberleutnant Viktor Brauer. Amidst the tension, unexpected warmth emerges from the characters, drawing readers into the emotional depth of the story. Miller's masterful storytelling, coupled with nail-biting sequences and genuine connections, makes this a must-read, transcending the genre boundaries to appeal to a wide audience.

I’m not usually a fan of books about the sea, but this one also dealt with WWII and the attempt to rescue a Jewish family from the Nazis. It’s a great yarn well told.

I really enjoyed the book, basically about an American merchant ship and crew of smugglers trying to avoid U-boats in the days before America entry into WWII. Though fiction the author John Miller really did his homework when he'd write of details on the merchant ship and U-boat. He'd mention some item, vehicle, or weapon and I'd research the item he was speaking of. I understand a couple sequels are in the pipeline and look forward to reading them. I believe this may be Mr Miller's first novel and I believe a job well done.

Miller’s book is thrilling and fast. I read it in a couple days because I wanted to know what would happen to the characters I quickly became invested in. The captain is a character made for the movies….so is a “slippery” scene on the bridge that you see coming but can’t wait to see exactly how it’s going to turn out. I was pleasantly surprised by events and plot turns throughout. I hope there will be a sequel.

Talk about action filled, and a thriller of his story. “The Hunt for Peggy Sue” has it all.

I rarely read a book about merchant seamen (that is just because there aren’t many out there.) As a former merchant seaman, (a summer job between years and college.) I was a especially pleased and about this story.

The Captain Jake Rogers was a strong leader. I really liked him and the fact that the other characters were very readable and reliable really made the story special. Additionally, the book was full of facts that were well referenced.

Fast pace reading is what I like! This story does it for you it’s a great storyand one I could not put down.

I highly recommend this book and I’m looking forward to reading the sequel.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

A solid tale, and I particularly enjoyed the language of the telling.
Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2023
The Hunt for the Peggy C had a lot going for it: a good story and good writing. But, alas, there was way too much “author intrusion.” That is, the author much too often interrupted the flow of the tale to explain how certain things worked on a merchant marine vessel or a German U-boat; or how various items got their names; or what caliber of ammunition a gun used. Interesting, I guess. But the explanations crippled the forward momentum of the story. I wish John Winn Miller had developed the interpersonal relationships of the characters more fully rather than writing expositions that better belonged in a nonfiction book. Still, some readers may enjoy the novel since it did have a solid foundation: the pursuit of a merchant marine ship by a German U-boat through the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean, with the U-boat commander having a personal ax to grind against the merchant vessel’s captain.
