The best children's book series that are undercover educators

Why am I passionate about this?

I have been in love with the ocean, since I first visited Galveston at the age of five. The cadence of the waves and tide called to me in a way that is hard to explain, and every creature within simply mesmerized me. I read everything about the ocean that I could find, and I haven’t stopped to this day. My book is fact-checked by two marine biologists as well, just to ensure that all of the information is accurate.

Feather Chelle Why did I love this book?

As a homeschool parent, I am always looking for fun books that teach, almost without children realizing. These are definitely hard to find, but the number 1 series that always comes to mind is The Magic Treehouse. In these books, children travel back in time to experience history firsthand. My kids love the characters and the fascinating adventures, and I love that they are educational and easy to read. When teaching history, I always check to see if there is a book in this series to help enrich our studies.

Book cover of The Lightning Thief

Feather Chelle Why did I love this book?

I had to include this zany series because it is a definite favorite in our household. In fact, we read the entire first book without my kids even realizing that they were learning about Greek mythology. When we started to discuss what we learned, we were led into a whole new world of research and exploration. The entire family wanted to learn more and more about the fascinating gods and goddesses and the wild stories about them.

I am a freelance writer from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, specializing in media history and speculative fiction. I have been enchanted by animation since childhood and followed many series avidly through adulthood. My viewing inspired my MA thesis on the history of animation, out of which grew two books on the history and theory of animation on television, America 'Toons In: A History of Television Animation (available from McFarland and Co.) and The Encyclopedia of American Animated Television Shows (available from Rowman and Littlefield). Hopefully, others will follow.
