My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Mel Fell

Kim Howard Why did I love this book?

I couldn’t help but fall in love with Mel, a young Kingfisher bird who one day bravely decides to leave the nest. To me, this is the best blend of fiction and nonfiction, heart and humor.

Mel is a determined character who tries something new even though she’s scared. The book is encouraging, sweet, and beautifully illustrated. Even the format of the book is fun, as you rotate it around while reading.

By Corey R. Tabor,

Why should I read it?

An especially enjoyable and satisfying read-aloud!

Sometimes, you might fall

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Day the Crayons Came Home

Kim Howard Why did I love this book?

I love the humor of this book just as much as my kids do. It’s clever and an excellent example of a perfect sequel to a well-loved first book, The Day the Crayons Quit.

In the story, missing crayons write postcards home, explaining their journeys or why they’re missing. The new crayons that are introduced are hilarious, and there are some great references to crayons from the first book. The postcard format makes it a fun and unique read.

Do Mommies Ever Sleep?

By Kim Howard, Karen Obuhanych (illustrator),

Book cover of Do Mommies Ever Sleep?

What is my book about?

My book, told from the Baby’s point of view, is a funny tribute to the exhausting work of raising an infant.

Throughout the story, Baby wonders why Mommy never seems to sleep. Is it because she lost her paci? Or is she really hungry? Or maybe she’s too gassy? As Baby tells a friend during a playdate one night, she said she got up five times!

Mommy clearly needs to get some sleep, and since Baby is such an expert, he offers some wise and witty advice about how to get to bed.

Kim Howard Why did they love this book?

My kindergartener shared, “I like this book because it’s really silly, and I think it would be great for everyone, too. If we had a new toy and it broke, we wouldn’t act as dramatic, so I think it’s fun to see.”

An added bonus about this book is that she can read it herself and loves the “dramatic” parts.
