My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Johnathan

Elise Smith Why did I love this book?

I loved this book because of Johnathan’s fighting spirit.

Many war stories are about the fighting – the soldiers’ stories. This story is about the thoughts and life of a boy who was a child at the start of World War ll. He tells of how his father goes off to war. He suffers through the blitz and losing his home. He is forced to live with other relatives, and eventually to go away from his family to another part of the country.

It is interesting reading about a boy’s understanding and confusion about catastrophic events, and how these events shape his behavior, before eventually arriving at a more peaceful outlook on life.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Empowering You As You Are Powerful

Elise Smith Why did I love this book?

This book is inspiring, uplifting, and encouraging in today's volatile world.

I found this book a breath of fresh air and an excellent reminder of how powerful we are, this can be hard to believe and see surrounded by media and war on a daily basis. This book encourages one to look deep within yourself, turn off the TV, put one's phone down, and listen to your voice.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Diary of a Kiwi Kid

Elise Smith Why did I love this book?

I really enjoyed reading this book a tale of a writer's journey and discovery.

The style is very apt of kiwi culture, I myself a kiwi found the scenes and setting very accurate and the characters relatable. Having a glossary is very helpful with the Māori words. The characters have familiar traits of everyday kiwis I have met and live around. New Zealand culture shines through, one is given a realistic feel and educated view of the history.

The main character Hamiora is humorous making me laugh out loud in places. The story is intriguing, keeping me reading with hints of what’s to come. Hamiora is full of personality and chuckles. The subject matter and storyline are age appropriate and fitting for the audience it is written for.

What is this book about?

Jack Jondell seems like your typical Year 10 student, hanging out in Gisborne with his mates. But Jack also writes winning speeches in English and Te Reo, while his twin sister Hinemarama writes rap.

Did they inherit this talent for words from Grandma Rosalyn, who was always determined to be published? She joined Junior Writers while still in primary school. He can’t ask her how she did it, because Rosalyn mysteriously disappeared in Bangladesh when she was eighteen. She hasn’t been heard of since.

It isn’t until 2017, forty years later, that Jack gets a chance to understand what sort…
