My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Anywhere You Run

Leslie Budewitz Why did I love this book?

A bookseller pressed this into my hands when I couldn’t find what I was looking for. I read it on the plane and almost wished the flight were longer so I could finish before being jolted back to the present day.

1964, Jackson, Mississippi – sisters Violet and Marigold are desperate to leave their hometown after the deaths of their parents and older sister. They take different paths, never imagining that they have a dangerous connection to the brutal murder of three men—one Black, two white—as part of the resistance to the Summer of the Vote. Nor do they imagine their paths will lead them back to each other.

This book transported me to another time and place, making me shiver with the terror of the sisters’ fight for survival, and rejoice with relief when they choose hope – just what historical fiction ought to do.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Golden Spoon

Leslie Budewitz Why did I love this book?

A rare stand-alone cozy mystery, set at a baking competition at a Vermont country estate. Six contestants, each distinct and intriguing, a hostess with a secret, and a judge the rest love to hate.

As a writer, I admire the clear, compelling flow of the story, even as we start with a prologue, move back four days, wrap up in less than a week, then ice the cake with an epilogue a year later. Add the shift between the hostess’s third-person narration and the contestants’ first-person voices, stir in our knowledge that someone’s been killed but not who, and the result could be an inedible mess. Instead, this is a thoroughly delicious read.

Cozies are sometimes criticized for using murder as a device and not addressing real-world issues. In the end, justice is served, as it should be, with a twist that shows a good cozy can hit hard and go down sweet.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of One by One

Leslie Budewitz Why did I love this book?

It’s fun to be scared, when you’re home and safe.

The owners and staff of a troubled British tech start-up rent a chalet for a ski weekend in the French Alps, complete with an in-house host and a gourmet chef, to hash out their response to a buy-out offer. When an avalanche strands them and guests start dying, it becomes clear that the odd person out holds the decisive vote – and will keep on killing to get revenge.

As we shift between a character who unravels as more of the truth is revealed and one who gathers strength and fights back, I wasn’t always sure who to believe, and that kept me riveted.

The ending is the best of suspense: a true battle between what might happen and what we hope for.

This instant New York Times bestseller and “claustrophobic spine-tingler” (People) from Ruth Ware follows a group of employees trapped on a snow-covered mountain.

Getting snowed in at a luxurious, rustic ski chalet high in the French Alps doesn’t sound like the worst problem in the world. Especially when there’s a breathtaking vista, a full-service chef and housekeeper, a cozy fire to keep you warm, and others to keep you company. Unless that company happens to be eight coworkers…each with something to gain, something to lose, and something to hide.

When the cofounder of Snoop, a trendy London-based tech start-up, organizes…
